Design a better leash

Hi Matt and any others reading. How are the kaohi leashes in regard to toe catching compared to a standard single coil? That’s my biggest irritation, bringing front foot forward and collecting a coil between my toes. Thanks

I never get the front foot caught on mine, but regularly find my back foot on top of it when prone foiling.

I’ll say that if you can’t learn to kick the leash out from your toes then foiling is going to be a struggle :joy:

I think Kaohi good, as the coils are away from your feet, and if you adjust the dyneema section then you can tune it so that it won’t get between your feet.

Speaking of leashes, I’d like a Kaohi invisi leash for parawing that replaces the coils with straight(er?) urethane. The tight coils are :exploding_head: disaster with the lines.

Thanks, less of lacking the ability to kick it out - more just the irritation of having to do so!

Yeah it’s super irritating, on prone I’ve given up hope, just use the regular creatures short coil, downwind the tangles are real but less of an issue for me.

I’ve heard guys are using them upside down with the coils at the board helps for that.

Put your leash plug on the underside of your board, makes a huge difference to stop

standing on the fucker.

I tried this, helps a lot.

Another good trick for the coiled leash, is that if the lines get caught, pull the leash on either side of the tangle, ejects the lines… clever

I’d imagine this creates additional drag, can you feel a difference?

No, I don’t notice any extra drag.

any downsides? before i attack my board with the router

No downsides, probably wouldn’t be a great idea if you plan to use a Foildrive though

I’m getting into parawinging and I’ve ditched my usual coil attached to waist belt, for fear of tangles in the bridles. Matt’s tip above is great though. I’ve used standard 6ft surf leashes in the past, attached to back of harness, stashing some of the excess length once up and riding in the belt, to limit drag. Problem with those is that any proper contact to the trailing edge of the mast is likely to nick it and weaken it significantly for when you’ll actually need it. To remediate this, I’ve added a 8mm braided dyneema sleeve over the urethane, leaving some slack to allow a decent stretch of the leggie. That’ll make it absolutely resistant to cuts, but I’m a bit worried of the drag if it gets to dangle a bit in the water as it is quite chunky. I guess I’ll find out soon…

So an update on my situation, I ordered an Inviz hybrid mini leash from Poseidon (thank you!). Absolute game changer for me. No toe or foot tangling, even with white water takeoffs and as it’s so thin I barely notice if I stand on it. Interesting to see how long it lasts but well worth it in my first few sessions.

For anyone who has flipped an inviz leash - how did you make the attachments? I have a rail saver that was compatible w the coiled part and the bungee part has a swivel on one end, but I’m trying to figure out how to attach the other end. It would be easy with a waist leash but my preference is to attach it to a cuff. I can probably thread a rail saver string through the cuff somehow but curious how others did it.

Kaohi is releasing a flipped version very soon but making do w what I’ve got.

Won’t the coil just bang on the board the whole time?

I know a lot of people are running it this way with parawing and no issues. Maybe works better with a waist attachment to keep it off the board though. We’ll see I guess, but I can’t imagine it’s any worse than a double coil leash like I’ve been using. There isn’t a ton of slack.

I use the board for parawing and wing and I don’t like having a waist leash winging and I don’t like the waist leash parawing because Its annoying when I rotate the stash belt around.

I guess I was thinking more for prone. I’m using the inviz mini calf leash and it’s about as good as it gets next to not using a leash at all… and that’s saying a lot because I don’t like calf leashes.

I definitely wouldn’t want the coil near the board though

People are flipping them to keep the coils away from the parawing lines. Agree if lines aren’t in the picture it doesn’t make sense.

Just take the coil off.

Here’s what I did - straight to a cuff from a Veia leash
