Foil drive has been really focused on moving upmarket towards competing more and more with full-on efoils. Looks like there are a few downmarket competitors in the sub 3K range - Waydoo FoilBoost and a new one with adds all over my facebook - FoilDash - a Duotone fanny pack style battery. I feel like the fanny pack assist is just a gen1 FD with a belt and a longer chord.
What are the chances we see a product sub 2K so i can get one for my kid - so i can get those sessions lost to childcare back.
Always follow the reviews, Hydro Dan did a good one on the Waydoo, it came up short but probably fine for kids. The Foildash is a kickstarter project so may never come to be.
Secondhand is a great option as Foildrive support is excellent even after the warranty ends.
There is little protected IP with foil assists, either technical or legal. They are all made using common or easily replicated parts. Most components with origins from eskate and e-bike which is 100x the market for development and cost down.
10 mins on AliExpress and you can figure out the individual part costs and what would be the floor for what would be the cheapest possible system. When DIYing or buying pre assembled kits you are effectively self insuring against warranty and technical issues compared to buying a Foildrive.
Get a Foildrive, it’s a safe investment.
I’ve had mine for 3 years, it’s still in mint conditions after 1000 sessions, and I could sell it anytime for a decent price.
In the same time, I’ve bought/sold about 15 boards and foils and lost thousands in the process.
Foildrive is the constant of my setups.
Will be for years.
