Thanks Zarb, good stuff. You aren’t kidding about the pull from the Power Pack, I’m waiting on a couple of v2 Pocket Rockets that will hopefully help. My only other wings are a 5m Pocket Rocket that is good when it’s super light but that doesn’t happen here too often, and a 3.4m Kanaha that honestly is a nightmare after using the Power Packs. The Kanaha always feels out of control and is really hard to get upwind compared to the Power Pack in my experience, I always walk back when I take out the Kanaha, to the point where I think I’m done trying with it. It wasn’t until I got the power packs that I realized what a challenging wing it really was for me. I know others like it, but I just haven’t had good luck with it at all.
If the V2’s are anything like the V1’s, you’ll be super happy with them. I have both PRs & PPs, and the PPs are fun for blasting around at mach-stupid. If I have a short session where I just want to do really silly stuff, I enjoy the PPs a lot. But if I want a nice cruise upwind, the PRs are definitely my choice.
Thanks for posting, from your photos I made one to try out tonight. I really like to use the black-diamond climbing runner as webbing stock for stuff like this because it is soft and supple on the hands. Pretty easy DIY.
Sick!! Tell us how you liked it.
Hey all, just wanted to circle back around and tell you all thank you again. I’ve been using your tips and insights every session lately and my harness skills and knowledge are progressing rapidly.
I did order one of the PKS lines linked above but unfortunately I ordered a “small” and it’s just crazy short so I am still using my original PKS elastic line. I’ve started using a zip tie to secure the two cinch points together at the front of the bar and that’s working great to keep them tight and in place on the bar. I have some climbing runners and paracord bungee material on order so I’ll start experimenting with making my own once that arrives.
Using the harness when I’m in the water and sitting/kneeling has been such a big energy saver, that was a great tip! As for riding, I’m still pretty unsteady on my feet/foil but I’ve had some good long reaches while hooked in and it’s just so nice when it all is going well. It’s really gusty where I’m riding so I still am not super confident in getting hooked in but I’m getting there. I’m really thankful for the dialog here, it’s been incredibly helpful to me, so thanks very much to all of you who shared. Much appreciated!
Where did you get that hook? I something largely the same out of dyneema but ended up going with a 1" webbing strap to wrap around the bar instead of a hook. However, in overpowered conditions it’s hard to hold onto the bar/strap with enough pressure to keep the strap in place. I’d like to try the hook.
I was using something similar that I got on etsy (link below). Found I preferred the standard harness hook, but give it a shot.
Found this hanging/magnet attachment hook approach usable only in light wind. in strong, gusty winds, its more difficult (read: effortful) and requires one handed flying for the duration of the hook in.
