I see a patient label on the bottom of the cassette in the picture, logical as it gives RIIFT control and sales for every RIIFT board produced. KT boards here in Oz are expensive, over 3k AUD and some approaching 4k, maybe the other brands involved will be more affordable. At those prices you probably only want to buy a board once, so sizing will be super important.
No chance for other board manufacturers unless DRIIFT sells the cassette as a stand alone.

That would be a smart move on their part and would be a relatively straightforward job to gut a board and install the Cassette.
Butā¦ theyāve already got some major players on board and big name riders as well. This isnāt going to be a product for the poors

Seems very odd to use a plate and not a hollow box to fill the battery. This will give you less volume and more inertia while itās filled with water

Is there a risk of electrocution or do they have another circuit in the BMS to sense a short?
Hi Jack,
I didnāt design the backpack kit so canāt give you details but yes, it is designed to tolerate a short circuit. The cable connects via an external plug ie external to the battery box. Nothing fancy, just an MR60 connector, so that itās modular and allows easy trouble shooting and parts replacement
The cable was disconnected several times in the water as I sorted out the correct leash length, and the batteries and electronics are fine. I just paddled back to the beach, removed the battery to be on the safe side (and because Iām a wuss), flushed the plug with fresh water, applied the dielectric grease and went straight back out there.

Had a good chat with Adam Snow at the hatch today about the Rift system. The plan is to have to option to buy just the box/battery system for shapers/DIY folk, 3 battery sizes, and option for just a plate (fits ~4 modelos/1 bag of wine) or a foam blank for non assisted mode

All these years when Iāve been complaining about tracks and how I hate that they still fail even though weāve been using trackās since the 70ās as fin boxes. I never envisioned that this is how they would be replaced.

So each battery is a complete base unit with associated electronics, having multiple batteries means multiple units. Wonāt this be expensive?
Itās a good point, I would think battery cells costs and then assembling them and making them waterproof are 90% of the associated costs. From building a DIY, the other electronics beyond battery is basically a radio receiver which is $10-20 and a speed controller for ~$100 where the battery is easily $500++ range for just the cells.
itās an interesting compromise and I think the exact compromise that Foil Drive didnāt make where their ESC and receiver is in the base. If Iām correct then you need to bind the remote to each battery pack.
One thing I havenāt seen clearly is what the plug is for, maybe the esc is somewhere else as that plug seems to have 3 pins for the motor and another 2 pins for who knows what?
Also cool to see the battery range all in the same form factor. And a smaller diameter motor. Otherwise all looks very much stuff that can be mixed and matched with other stuff off the shelf
Iām pretty frothed for this whole thing despite being salty at the start of this thread 
Prices!! One question is the price of the board insert.

I think I saw a comment they are working on a travel variation somewhere iirc, like foil drive I imagine you screw them together somehow. (maybe wrong)
