I’m fairly new to downwinding (years of prone foiling before that) and ride an Evolution 155 (with 14.5AB tail) with a parawing. With the groundswell running this week, it feels overpowered, and I’m nervous about riding the bigger sets or the swell near the beach because I feel like I’ll blow up. I’m looking for something smaller and a bit faster. Options I’m considering:

•Progression 140: I already own it and think it’s slightly faster than the 155, but I haven’t tried it. I never see anyone riding it downwind… it’s just been sitting in my garage, I haven’t even ridden it with the short fuse & 14.5 AB tail.

•Progression 125 (AR 10): Can find them used for about $250-300. I’ve seen people ride them downwind.

•Evolution 135: About $500+.

•Quest: Probably the most speed range, but way more money, and I’d guess it’s the least turny (though I hear it turns well). Not sure I’d use it enough to justify the cost.

For chest-to-head-high groundswell and parawing, is the 125 at that price the move, or is the Evolution 135 worth the extra money? Or should I just make the 140 work for the handful of Florida days that are big?

Anyone in a similar spot, I’d appreciate your input. Thanks!

My daily driver here in Fl is the Evo 155, but on bigger DW days riding the Evo 135. Feel like it’s a good setup, but I’m just starting to unwrap the DW game.

The 140 is way slower than the 155. I tried it once after 3 months on the 155/115 and listed it for sale the same day.

I think you should try a 115. It still has excellent glide and pumps surprising well for its size. I never rode a 135 but I would think there’s too much overlap with the 155 and it wouldn’t give you enough of what you’re looking for.

If you’re talking about consistent chest high plus, then maybe an Aggression? I never rode one but it might be a better choice. The Evolutions really lock it at speed.

I agree with bdavis the p140 is pretty slow and the glide doesn’t really carry you that far. I am 185 lbs and ride the e155 when it is small and the e135 when it is bigger. I have always rode bigger foils but when I am powered up on the parawing I’m finding that they are a handful. The e135 has been great for me on the parawing. Handles the top end of my sailing speeds and I am able to bomb down some solid sets once I’m packed away. We have been having a lot of north east wind here in New Jersey which comes with lots of swell and I have been having a blast on the e135 +14.5 AB tail.

Seth, thx for the response! How does the pump compare- p140 vs e135?

For parawing down winding you could pump yourself out of the grave a little easier on the p140 but with the extra glide of the e135 it’s easier to connect the dots without hitting the grave. If you already have the p140 it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try with the ab tail.

I am a downwind beginner and using foil drive as assist but I have been using the progression 170 and 140. Only able to connect 10-12 bumps most of the time before hitting a hole and having to pump to redline or get back on motor. Well Saturday evening last week I tried my progression 125 with 14.5 afterburner tail and I was having the best run of my life. Getting to relax on foil at some points and gliding from bump to bump for up to a minute at a time with minimal pump. Way different/ easier for some reason dropping down in size. I have never tried any of the evo or quest stuff yet

For others interested, I tested the 155e vs the 140p on similar (PW riding in place towing in to swell and wind bumps) back to back days for average speed:

**Group 140p had the higher average speed.**

**• Group 140p (12 speeds): average ≈ 15.15 MPH**

**• Group 155e (7 speeds): average ≈ 15.09 MPH**

The Evo 155 had almost the same top speed and has more glide. The 140p stays more maneuverable at high speeds (better role)

So what’s next? Smaller Evo or P125?

I can say that based on my time on the 155, 140 and 125 that the 125 will definitely have the most top end. It’s by far the fastest in the progression series other than the 100. The 125 and 100 seemed to be a completely different foil section with much higher top end speed. The 125 has great glide and would be a solid dw foil on the bigger days. The downside is it can feel locked in at high speed due to its span. A smaller Evo might be a more playful option at higher speeds but I am just guessing
