$1600 duty to get my $1000 gear!

I imagine if this was fraud then they wouldn’t quite ask for so much. If it was 200 I would have paid instantly without even thinking about it. But one and a half times the cost of the gear, that seems like a stretch.

I hope it is fraud. Unfortunately, the COO (country of orgin) is China regardless of shipping origin, and the tariff rate appears to be 145% today according to the news.. So for $1000 of product, you would have $1450 in customs duty plus fees… The HTS schedule 6306.30.10 (sail?) does not show a duty and the special rate of 20% from Mar 6 is the most current publication. Very confusing to say the least. I’d contact DHL via phone custumer service asap for details and options. Good luck!

I feel very sorry for JRS, but this is what you get when you as a country elect a government that acts like this.
Everyone knew that with Trump, new trade wars would be started (and let’s hope it stays to trade wars and not other wars/occupations/anextations).
In europe, goods from other countries are also taxed, but there is an item-by-item look at how much that is.
Products that are far below european production costs are taxed if there is a suspicion of state aid to eliminate competition, but other things like medicines or things we don’t make ourselves, so there is no competition either, less so.
(btw, ANY item sold from a shop to a consumer is subject to tax. True Taxfree does not exist in europe).
To my knowledge, virtually no foils and wings are made in the US in the volume that it can serve a market, so such high taxxes are therefore complete nonsense.
At the same time, no common sense company will start a factory in the US with such an unpredictable government and a looming recession.
After all, the carbon mostly comes from Japan and China, so even if it were made locally the raw materials would be taxed

Hopefully you guys sing out the next period and there will be a power shift to a government with a little more common sense.
I imagine that the ONLY people who will be happy with the current chaos are indeed fraudsters.

Well, all honesty…Canada aint that fricking great either. You ever hear anyone say, I cant wait to go on a dream vacation to Canada? But its kind of unfair for other Countries to charge American companies tariffs for exports into their country, but USA does the same and now " we’re the bad guys" ? If you’re worried about paying/buying foil gear for pleasure, then you’re more privileged than most.

Jeroensurf, you are correct in every way , it’s cause and effect. Just keep in mind not all of us voted for him.

Saltyhaole, tariffs don’t get charged to companies but to the individuals buying the goods. It’s designed to keep us buying local goods but we don’t manufacture and we never will because Americans won’t work for that cheap. These particular tariffs are going to pay for the corporate tax breaks that are going were going to sunset if the money wasn’t “found.”

Having said that, let’s not let politics devolve this forum too much.

Actually, for me and my wife Canada was a dream holiday that we did in 2019  Loved!
Regarding to Tariffs, like JRS already wrote, they don,t tax company,s, they tax the individuals who,s is buying it.
So no you guys are absolute not the bad guys, just the ones who gonna pay those tarrifs.

@JRS: I hear you.
We have more or less the same problem with an idiot with lot of votes here in the Netherlands.
Luckily we have a lot of parties so there is more to choose from, making it less likely that one party has an absolute majority in one of the Houses (and because we are a small country its in our case 1st and 2th Room instead of houses

@JRS What did you end up doing? Do you know if refusing shipment is even possible? I’m in a similar situation right now where I’ve ordered a couple Gong lowkites, and they are stuck in customs at the moment. I haven’t yet received notice of the tariff bill.

What’s funny is that I ordered another lowkite separately and that was delivered without issue. Presumably because it was under de minimis.

Supposedly de minimus is over. There was a brief period where us customs wasn’t charging tariffs due to a technical problem.

Foils aren’t the only bucket of goods being tariffed. A huge portion of the goods Americans purchase have supply lines with China in a mix. Disproportionally so for poor Americans. 1/3 of Americans have less than $400 in savings.

If these tariffs continue there will be rampant defaults and evictions of American families as the economy goes: thriving > recession > depression.

It’s height of privilege to pretend this has anything to do with foiling gear. It’s delusional to pretend we’re somehow going to get a bunch of jobs sewing shoes or that it would make a difference if we did.

I love Canada! I can’t wait to go on a dream vacation to Canada….amazing long point breaks, bottomless powder, hockey, comedians, great medical, and the nicest people ever. I can’t wait to go again!

+1 for Canada. I would be living there, but it’s much easier for me as a foreigner to take jobs away from hard working Americans than it is from Canadians.

I spoke with gong and they are going to refund me once the package is sent back, which is automatic after 5 days with the shipping company..

Good on Gong. Great to see a company step up and take the hit to help out a foiler when they don’t have to.

Actually, I think the number was 31.4% of voters elected this guy. Nowhere even close to the majority. Unfortunately, we have a problem with non voters. 36% didn’t vote which allows things like this to happen.

No, this is not about just consumers. Yes consumers will suffer, but businesses will suffer even more. Foil gear is just one thing. If you can’t buy new foil gear this year… Oh well, right? Except your local shops can’t afford for NO one to buy foil gear this year.

I own a business, and I’ve been getting killed for years. First supply chain inflation during covid, then labor shortage inflation, then greed inflation, and now this self-inflicted wound. And prices never return to their original state because of greed. I had no problem paying my taxes prior to Paul Ryan’s corporate tax cuts, because the laws were written such that if you reinvested into the business then it would offset the tax bill. Trickle down economics and voodoo economics don’t work, history has shown us that.
We are Lucky to be able to afford to get into this sport, at least now while the climate doesn’t kill our oceans-and this administration does not care about the environment.

I was just hit with a $200 import fee on my omen board from the appletree factory which is the 10% on everyone that isn’t China. Not ideal but I paid it which I obviously wouldn’t have for a 100%+ tariff.

That would be a $200 tax increase on a US citizen for those keeping track of who pays tariffs(hint, not the manufacturer).

Ordered two new wings which were probably already in the US because the price hadn’t changed. I think they are made in Sri Lanka which had very high but not China high tariffs. Would not have bought those if the tariffs were in effect.

Everyone making anything anywhere but China must be getting as much product as they can into the US right now. Any recreational goods made in China are basically a no go at this point if they weren’t already in the states when the tariffs hit. I think this is going to do very strange things to the foil gear market however it goes.

I think the entire thing is monumentally stupid, but it is even worse that they are starting targeted exemptions like for tech. Let’s crush small businesses but exempt the giants that actually could afford to build manufacturing in the US if that was a good goal to have.

The uncertainty of the tariffs changing hour by hour along with random exemptions means no one has the certainly to make the long term decisions that they say they are trying to incentivize. You just get lucky or unlucky about what the tariff is at the moment the stuff you ordered before the tariffs arrives.

Well we’re not going to solve any of this here. But if you’re one of the 36% of eligible voters in the US that couldn’t be bothered last November, please get yourself registered (then vote early and vote often  ) The mid terms aren’t very far away politically speaking.

Btw, I read just under 27% of eligible voters elected the Donvict in The Economist. I was born in NYC but these days here in the EU, I tell people I’m Canadian :expressionless_face:

For $1600 you could have a nice vacation in France for a week or two and just bring a couple of large suitcases. Just saying…

Trash Canada, blame other countries for the tariffs and then give a lesson in morality. Get a job in the government you will do very well !

Ok… silver lining. Prices for used gear in the US should also rise significantly in the coming months :money_mouth_face:
