It’s still a beta, so please let me know what breaks or feels off. Thanks for helping get this onto Android!
I wondered if you could apply the same algorithm direction to detect para powered downwinding vs pumping / racing .
The thought being that now more and more racers are carrying parawings, and us ex-sup no longer have the ability to race. Parawing “start only” racing would appeal to me, but then you’d no doubt have people abusing the privilege.
So you could “detect cheating” using the algo that recognises what a pumped segment looks like vs a para pulled segment.
A bit off the wall (and not immediately useful) but I thought it’s in the mix of what you’re thinking of!
What device are you guys running for your sessions? I have a forerunner 745, although good, it’s really laggy when I stop the run and save the data. Have to sit on my board for ages waiting for it to reset. Presume that’s what others are doing - separate recordings for each run?
You don’t have to reset anything with Foilrun
You can even start the recording well before you get in the water, and the algorithm will automatically trim your session for you once it processes. I sometimes drive all the way home forgetting to stop my recording, and it will process out all the useless stuff.
@WingsurferQLD stoked you’re on the Android beta!! FoilMad and Zarb nailed it, just one recording for the whole session. The algos do the trimming and parsing into runs, climbs (and the car ride home @Zarb )
I’m also hoping to have the Garmin beta up in the next few days, and I’m checking whether the 745 can be on it. Can’t wait to see your first PW runs! Let me know anything that breaks or feels off.
@FoilMad ahhh 5.95 per minute is rad!! Thank you for posting it Loved your PRV2 climbs over in the VMG thread too.
I just released some share reel experiments - tap the Share icon on a run and it’ll show your best streaks guitar-hero style. Would love to hear what you think, and how the numbers line up with what you feel on the water, especially once the Afterburner and Orbit show up!
@wrench do you detect foot switches? Could you infer it, or even ask? I thought it might be interesting data to see if the switchers really do get much better VmG or if it’s in their heads (asking as I need to commit to it…)
Be more interesting to see just how off the pace they are. I ride with someone who has the same angle and speed as me on their good side but on their toeside the difference is so large it’s not even worth discussing in speed and angle.
Ever see a kite racer or wing racer ride toeside. Too funny.
Foil run may find the wind angle by splitting your tacks and in that case it would just make their overall look ordinary not just one side
But yes I am just curios as to what the data would say in terms of how off the pace they are. That was my question, which amounts to: at what skill level does a rider overcome the lower control riding switch to make better ground to windward. It would be interesting to see all the non-switchers and how they progress once switching, or don’t, as the case may be.
Its funny when i look at my personal data that my bad side is always consistently better on the VMG than my natural side. I don’t really notice the difference anymore but i didn’t expect it would be consistently better and I have no idea why.
@wrench It would be great in the overview if it gave a total time in minutes from all the climbs versus total DW time. A percentage or ratio maybe.
On some of my sessions foil run misses my last run back to beach. Maybe the angle is not recognized as going DW but they are proper runs with very little cutting but might only be 500 meters. .
Angles are good on port and faster, so I guess you’re regular foot? Having the speed+angle is good (implies a vector or something), but it feels like having a sense for how long each tack was held for at that speed, might give a better sense of what was achieved.
Eg say “70% of your VMG came from your port tacks”. Can you interpret that from the chart?
