I think your the only one who has posted toe side angles beside HDIP below.
How much current assist going on there in August? AI say 2 to 2.5 knot conveyor this year.
If your happy riding toeside that’s ok. Enjoy the journey as you are lucky to have such a great bump riding location where you could get away with toeside riding. Not many places in the world where the current can take you upwind like that.
There is definitely a current boost going on. Oddly enough my best sessions according to FoilRun have been at a spot just upriver of the dam where (I think) there is far less current. I definitely have some outlier sessions as well that I haven’t posted because the numbers are too fantastic and there must have been shifting winds and/or strong current.
Honestly this back and forth discussion has been very useful to me and given me a lot to think about and work on in my own riding, so I appreciate your input. I’ve been working on my technique on heel side lately to try to better understand your position, and I’ve learned a lot there. I am mostly a one handed rider, and that’s why I have been having a hard time understanding why one would believe that toe side angles are limited. That hasn’t been my experience. However, when riding heel side I’ve lately been changing up to a two handed style and really trying to dig in and go as fast as possible and it’s been quite enlightening. I can point far higher even heel side when riding one handed, it’s just not possible to point as high when riding two handed for me. But, as any race sailor knows, the best VMG isn’t the closest to the wind and when riding two handed I can absolutely ride far faster and if I manage the angle correctly that leads to better VMG. I’m really enjoying the progression and hope to keep getting faster, so thank you for the inspiration there.
All that said, you are correct in that I am very fortunate to be where I am(this is my first season here) and I appreciate it daily. Like Hdip I too switch feet when winging(which I can’t see myself doing again honestly) but when parawinging I haven’t felt the need yet and I’m mostly doing very short upwinds and surfing when I see an opportunity so I feel like I have a reason to stay on my strong side. BUT! I can tell you for sure that it’s been a choice I’ve made to get me surfing as much as possible so I can improve there as quickly as I can, and I definitely see myself working on switching stance and other “advanced” techniques like tacks once I feel like I’m no longer in the early stages of learning the basics of parawinging and downwinding. I still have a long way to go as I’ve only really been at it consistently for this one summer. As soon as I get a chance to sail some place with longer reaches I’m sure I’ll be motivated to start to dig into getting better at riding both stances.
On a separate note, @wrench I was absolutely loving the browser based home page yesterday and came to post about it but it’s changed today! I was so stoked to see the drop down that allowed me to find my best VMG by wing and location which then linked to the session. That seems to be gone now? I loved that home page, just FYI!
@FluidFoil ahhh, I’ve been doing some rapid-fire iterations and apparently tidied a useful bit right out of existence Thank you for catching that!!
That should be back under Logbook → Gear: choose your wings above the graphs, then use the location dropdown in Best climbs below them to find and open the sessions.
You can also use Logbook → Sessions: choose the location under Spot, choose the wing under Filters → Gear, then change Newest ▾ to Best Sailing VMG.
Does either route get you back to what you were using? Happy to keep jamming on it!
