Trash-Bags (Parawing Lounge)

I don’t think you need to learn to dockstart but you should probably focus on collapsing the PW and pumping around before spending too much time trying a flat water pump up. At 95 kg you’ll want to go with a 5.5m (or bigger PW) and a 6’6" or bigger board at least 100L. I would recommend Quest 6.0, Frigate 5.5/6.5, POW2 5.5 as decent options. I tested out the PRv2 5.7m and it didn’t really extend my low end vs. my 4.7m Frigate as the pump is worse (much improved from PRv1 though)

1300 front wing depends on the specifics of that wing but it will probably be challenging. A wing like Atlas 1340 no problem, a wing like the Enduro 1300 will be harder.

The key is to time your hands to pump just after the apex of your leg pump and focus solely on forward speed. It also helps a lot if you can read the water and find even a tiny trough.

Just don’t bother, it won’t work.

Lol on the parawing FB while looking at PP reviews

I suggest dock start or sup foil. I learned to pw in 20 kts, then moved to Seattle where we have a lot of 10 kts days. I have dw boards and all kinds of big foils but it’s not really good enough. The PR v2 5.7 is not a 10 kts wing, but it’s been great with a sinker board and small foils in slightly better winds. For 10 kts days, dock starting and sup foil has been super fun!

Having lived through the entire evolution of both kites and wings it’s interesting to see parawings evolving.

Kites took about 10 years to go from two-line Wipikas (which I owned) to the Best Waroos (essentially the first modern kite design).

Wings took about 5 years to go from lousy with floppy handles to great in ~2024.

We’ll see how long it takes for parawings to shake-out, seems like they still have quite a way to go, should be great in about 2 more years.

@Johan @Slappy et al. Thanks for the advice.

Around here, almost everyone not on FD is SUPping. Seems like I should’ve done that from the get-go but I thought I could prone in an area with no reefs (lol).

FD was worth it.

Depends what you expect, but I think they are close to as “good” as inflatable wings, as far as speed, upwind, control, wind range, etc. at least not too far off. I expect the best parawings of today to hold up pretty well against future models.

Has there been a good thread on parawing backpacks? i’d like something that i can strap tight, can’t break, has tool and radio attachment points, comfortable etc. What is going currently? What is the right size cheapo dry bag for 1-2 parawings

We will revisit this claim in 24 months!

Looks like the forum bot hosed a new member. He probably posted a link.

I believe the 10L Piscifun waterproof backpack is popular among the Maui riders. I told a buddy of mine about it. He’s been using it for the last few months and raving about it. He said he told 10 other people about it and they all got it and love it. Unfortunately, now Amazon appears to be all out of the 10L sizes, lol.

As a fellow Waroo rider I will concur that the S3 has been a similar step function in performance for me for pw. I am now seeing the sport completely differently. I now look forward to ride in place uw/dw laps just as much as a good dw run. It’s so easy and comfortable to ride and it’s a step function of a performance jump. Some of the new hybrids sound like similar large jumps in pw performance.

Not sure why the AI moderator muted that. Seems like a good post.

I’ve heard the problem with all those waterproof rolltop bags is the same problem as the ozone mission pack. A big fall puts a ton of stress on the connection points and the straps can rip out.

That’s why the Kaohi/venstrata method seems to make a bit more sense. Minimalist dry bag that goes inside a normal backpack or waist pouch. The normal runners hydration/backpacks seem to work really well. Then you can put this inside it. I bought a buddy the 8L version of this and he likes it. Big enough to fit even the larger bars on 6m parawings.

been using drybags and on one of them the clips broke upon falling but you can replace them with marine grade carabiner clips that wont break.

there is another hiccup though with these generic drybags. they have more tangle points so you might need to tie up the loose / extra strap and cover them with something so your lines wont get catch your lines.

currently using flysurfer pow backpack and seems to work really well. No loose lines or bounce. no tangle points. i carry 1-2 extras in a separate zip lock / vacuum bag.

@Erik could you help with this? The forum bot appears to be nuking new accounts that post links.

ok yes that makes sense, the Jack Ho screenshot looked like something that could maybe be a runners backpack which you say will withstand a fall? I can’t imagine they design them with us in mind! But good idea to split the waterproofing from the backpacking

is the idea that the parawing fits where a 3L + hydration bladder would go?

Patagonia makes him custom backpacks to try out.

Ah. I wondered about that cool hat + string too.

Look at this thing with the pole storage for the ultra runners. Could sausage your pw into there? (almost certainly not, but it’s a cool looking rig)

and some very thin lines on the front, I guess the advantage here is that if you crash this is the only thing that can break, and it will just pop open and you can probably make a plan if something breaks

Pretty sure those are elastic lines. That probably goes a long way to preventing damage.

I posted some options earlier in this thread, but haven’t tried any of them. I think ~12 liters is the right size for storage.

Im using my Venstrata stash harness to pack a second parawing (harness is big enough for two), which I put inside a semi-dry bag ( Amazon.com 8L version). The Venstrata harness has a loop in the pouch and I use a keychain carabiner clipped to the D ring of that bag so that it doesnt get ejected. Has been working well, although the dry bag isnt totally dry. I would like a very simple vest option though. Willing to bet there are several options on the market in 6-9 mos.
