Most of our foils come from factory with a very attractive matte finish. What is this finish? I cannot imagine it’s the epoxy hot coat as it would be too costly to achieve this look with that. I can only imagine that after the foil or mast is sanded, it’s then sprayed with some kind of matte clear coat in order to achieve this look. I can’t say it’s better than a properly sanded component, but it sure looks better.
I’ve seen surfboard shapers use the matte 2X clear coat. Also seen Matt Kinoshita of Kazuma surfboards use a type of concrete sealer and finish it with one of those green semi abrasive sponges. These are just guesses
I have to guess that the final finish is sprayed and not touched. It wouldn’t be so consistent if it were… but maybe I’m wrong. I have seen the method of using abrasive sponges, but that still leaves little swirls and natural inconsistencies in the finish.
A lot of them use an acrylic surfboard sealer(or concrete sealer). Simple to rub on or spray on.
2K polyurethane clear coat, often with some black pigment. I use it regularly when repairing wings, repairs almost disappear.
Do you sand it after spraying? Or just use it a finishing coat? I’m working on a mast and I just rubbed on some water-based poly that I use for wood just to see how it does. Only in a small section. Seems good. But I’d need to sand it to look right.
That said, I use satin poly spray to repair Appletree boards and it looks factory almost.
Final finish, no sanding after unless your wanting a race finish.
Thanks. This gives me room to experiment. I’ll finish this mast for “race” but I’d like to eventually test a few final poly coatings to see how close I can get to factory finish. I can rattle-can it, but I also have a proper tank compressor and paint gun, so there’s that.
