Wingfoil wing drop with drift anchor

@Jonnpow A little floaty with a flag so you don’t have to reach down too far lol.

Would have to figure out a way of keeping it from drifting downwind of the anchor. Maybe like:

Weight to keep it upright and help deploy and a flag to see it and snag it up when you foil past. Might be too bulky tho

Progress report. The drift anchor has completely changed how I wing. Use it every session now. Still ride waves flagged but I drop as often as I can. The longer the paddle back the sweater the ride

Recently did a wing drop and rode to the land downwind about 500 feet away. Was nice to hangout on land for a few minutes, rest and have a drink while waiting for the wing to drift down. Arrived right at our entry ramp, think I’ll be trying to do more of that when things line up. Just don’t forget about the wing before it arrives at the shore!

That’s how it’s done! No paddle back required

Ok, overdue follow up. Finally got the Cloud9 Anchorman. It really has perfected the wing drop drift anchor and is well worth the premium. It is so well designed. From the easy to pack anchor chute to the built in swivels that prevent a twisted up leash it really addresses all the short comings of my cheapo Amazon drift anchor. I was a skeptic, but I really don’t have much negative to say about the anchorman. I love how integrated it feels and how easy it is to deploy vs pulling my ghetto anchor from under my rash gaurd.

I did have one run away incident where my wing managed to pull the anchor free and it somehow got stuck inside the leading edge, resulting in a tumbling wing. Luckily I was almost to the wing when it happened and I was able to catch it. May eventually add some weight to the anchor as others have recommended. But I think it was a freak event as it has not happened again.

I balance that run away incident with a nightmare ghetto anchor scenario where shore pound dislodged my anchor and resulted in my board getting tangled with the anchor which shredded my wing. Would never happen with the anchorman.

Wing drops are just so fun for onshore days where flagging is not as effective, glad we have such an awesome solution.

Omen foils fellas on using a wing anchor for downwinding. Interesting that they are just using a weight, not a parachute sea anchor.

I’ve found that in LW if you ride a fast paddling board you can just let your wing go without any anchor. This has the added benefit of not requiring any paddling back to your wing, just sit back and let it drift to you.

€12 at decathlon gets you a swimmer’s resistance training parachute kit. 3 sea anchors of varying sizes, a leash, and a waist belt. Unbeatable.

Have you tried them?

Yes, used large one in lake conditions, 15 gusting 25kts, works fine.

Nice one, can pick up here cheap too and have been mulling on giving this a go

I think any chute will work, but its important that it have some weight to reduce the risk of it getting stuck in the canopy. Weight helps it fall out of the canopy and catch if the wing happens to tumble. The Anchorman handle is just enough weight to give you perspective. I really like the cheap options, but the 24in anchorman is a great option for more security entering an exiting the shore break. Had an anchor stowed under my rash guard come out and wrap around my foil which resulted in a nicely diced up wing. Addressable things if your careful but things to keep in mind. Stoked to see this thread active again, wing drops are awesome. If I ever found a relay buddy for dw maybe I would not feel the need to parawing. But Parawing is pretty awesome too.

Most swim resistance parachutes look pretty flimsy to be trusting out on the water.

How do yall like the anchorman as just a leash? Thinking about getting one and wondering if just using it without dropping it’s still a viable product? Need a new leash anyways, and trying to justify the purchase price

The leash itself is pretty underwhelming / standard. You are buying it for the anchor and release mechanism. I actually disassembled mine and dont use the belt (which is fine, but not supportive enough for a harness) or leash - just clip the anchor and QR to whatever leash I’m using on that wing and find various ways to clip the release to my harness and stow the anchor in a pocket or rashguard when its not deployed.

I have the smaller orange one and while it works, I’d get the bigger red one if I were to do it again (wasn’t available when I got it). I wouldn’t trust the orange anchor in gusty or overpowered conditions. I use it when I’m winging waves in lighter conditions (probably sub 17 knots) only and I don’t just chuck the wing - I drop the anchor more carefully so that I know it will catch.

Yeap -
I have the orange with belt and just ordered the new Harness anchorman which only comes with red anchor.

The orange works for me with:
3m AFS D-Lite - whole wind range - not having issues at 20-25knots, although it can flip sometimes, but my spot lets me go ride the wave a bit more donwiwnd and I can catch the wing no hassles.

4m - PPC M1 - at over 17-18 knots it’ll start to flip more and still can handle but won’t be too comfortable - So mostly use it when winds are under 15knots, which is most of the time that I take the 4m.

6m - AFS Diamond v1 - will hold up to 12 to 14 knots -
So I’m a lighter rider 70kg - over that, and most riders will want the red parachute.
