3 Foiling Tips for Better Glide & Efficiency

Made a little video of some tips that really helped me when foiling. I hope you enjoy

I think missing something critical (which you are doing naturally, but don’t mention) for both turning and pumping, work on standing further back, it makes the foil turn better, pumping easier

here is a thread about it

That’s great thanks, something to work on next session!

I will be doing way more tips going forward and that is actually one of the topics as well. Thank you for the note.

very cool. Another one is to learn to ride smaller tail and/or less tail angle of attack. Less stable but more glide

I tried thinking about standing still and letting the foil do its thing and it worked really well, so that’s awesome, thanks

One thing I’d like some tips/advice on is how to approach pumping back through the swell, like do you pump up then down with the wave, or just stand there till it’s past etc…

I’m not sure what the best technique is for pumping over a non breaking wave but my current goal is to keep my mast height constant. I pump up the wave and then glide down the back. Tons of fun when you gain speed going down the back side of the wave.

Ah okay, thanks, that’s something to try. I think I always try to pump back down, but I’ll try the glide instead :+1:

Definitely making a video on how to pump or flow through turbulence. But I do pump through swell how you would pump on a pump track skateboarding. Keeping the foil yup and down with the contour of the wave if that makes sense.

Love this video. I discovered the same this past Winter. Been teaching the wife.

One thing to add, that is a bit of a head scratcher for me. I can stand still and high, feeling the water, and glide farther with a bigger tail. When I try to reduce drag with a smaller tail, the foil is much quicker to loose mast height and force me to pump a bit. I wish I could have both. Less drag, and the added lift to stay high with less work. haha.

Well the bigger tail adds stability and keeps you higher in the water column. I personally only use smaller AR tails when I am going with the swell or wind for periods of time.
