Hi all, i’m 95kg dry, 109kg wet (6mm wetsuit for the Norwgian sea). Ive already broken one F-one mast connector and now im looking to upgrade my setup. Main goal is parawinging and dockstarting. For parawinging I use a 2.5m + 4m flysurfer POW with a F-One Phantom 1280 front foil. Riding a 130L Rocket DW sup board.
How does the axis pro carbon mast / fatty mast compare to the code HM+ set up? Everyone has different opinions and its hard to get past marketing from retailers.
What im interested in is real life experience from heavy 95kg+ riders who have ridden both axis and code.
What is stiffer? What is more fun? What is going to last 5 years? A potential two quiver set up for axis would be the Spitfire 1100 and Fireball 1350. For code its Code 1300s and 1725s.
I started around 95kg with the takuma 1750sqcm / aluminum mast. It was ok in flat water. First time in the sea I felt every problem people complained about.
I got the axis High Mod Power Carbon 75mm, and 1310 (2080sqcm) setup and it felt significantly more sturdy.
I’m around 85kg now and going to pick up the axis 1750 / thicker mast. If I were you, I’d wait on reviews for that before you pick.
Axis fatty mast will be much stiffer than anything in code lineup. Yes it won’t be as fast but parawing and dock start that’s not really a big factor. Plus you’ll get much more control and feel out of the big wings with a mast that stiff. Price point is good too.
I’m 95kg, switched to code and love it. The 1725 is a super fun wing and really playful for its size. I rode the lift M2 mast previously and noticed a big change in stiffness with the plus mast from code. Also ride the 1130s and 1075r and have really enjoyed both at my size.
you don’t need the fatty in my opinion. The axis high modulus is great. The ultra-high modulus is probably about the same, but less drag through the water. With the big wings you’re looking at, you won’t be able to tell the drag difference.
my opinion is that there is nothing else quite like the Code S series of wings. The axis spitfire isn’t even close, they are a complete dog in comparison. I don’t know the fireball, but I have heard it is similar to the code R. Overall, I think you’ll be best off with Code.
I’m 95+wetsuit in cold water and I personally think the 980S was my sweet spot front wing for supfoil and wing. I hated the 1300S, too big. The 980S has a lot of low end grunt to get out of the water or you could size up to the 1130S
With the Code 85+ mast and 1540s I begin to feel slight mast flex. Below that, stiff as steel. With the Axis Power Carbon and old 1300 I could feel mast flex. Below that, all was good.
Im a pretty heavy rider 240 lbs i haven’t been on axis for a while but I do ride code and had to epoxy the mast to the fuse because there is a little wiggle in the connection.I ride the 80 uhm mast and 1130s foil, I love the foil but not a fan of the connection or the small fasteners.
I would suggest Project Cedrus mast. The aluminum is gonna be your stiffest, toughest, and most versital mast. You can own just about any foil setup and spend only 150 for a new adaptor. Not to minimize carbon but they also have some wicked carbon designs.
One note, these are so popular right now it might be a bit to get an order. Patience is worth it!
I’m right around 95kg, been happy with code, can’t speak for axis … been running the 75 + mast and mostly 960r and 1250r downwind sup and prone foiling, no issues with mast or front wing flex so far, rig feels very stiff, connections are solid now 9 or so months in to using this setup almost exclusively
I’m 88 kg and been riding the Code 1250R for 5 months dockfoiling and I LOVE it!! Before I rode the Axis 1201 for 2 years dockfoiling. The Axis 1201 pumped nicely though had more drag and was super hard to ride, and this is after 2 years on it. For me the Code foils are like 3X easier to ride than the axis foils, easier to launch, steer, turn everything and the 1250R goes about 50% longer than the 1201 for me, like 90 seconds instead of 60 seconds pumping. I think a big reason for the easier riding is the tip to tip “span stiffness” of the Code foils. Especially for heavier folks dockfoiling where you are pumping alot, the weight of the pump will flex the tips up of the wing and reduce the anhedral angle and make the foil less stable and this changes thru the pump stroke, this tip to tip “span flex” is especially bad with the Axis setup as they have a massive cutout in the front wing where the fus attaches, plus lots of bolts so more drag etc, so its not just about mast stiffness.
Re the Code purge..actually on this side of the pond (Italy, France and Spain) it is the complete opposite. People selling Armstrong and KT to get Code.
Code has something neither KT or Armstrong have, ie an accessible AR 13 set of fronts.
Wrt to the original question I am 92kg, and for light wind parawing I use 1250R and light wind winging 1130S.
Then, in high wind conditions, all the S and R works great. I had 850S, 770R and both of them are fantastic.
I came from KT Atlas and so far Code is superior in terms of glide, speed and early lift.
100% code R give you better speed and glide than Atlas, but better early lift? There is simply no way, the early lift on Atlas is heaps better than Code R or S unless you are comparing 1 size down Atlas. I would put the early lift on Atlas about 1.5 sizes down from R.
For a heavy rider though the Axis Fatty FB 1750 or 1500 seem like the right play.
Hmm let’s agree to disagree on that. I had extensive time on both, and granted Atlas 1130 has earlier lift than Code 1130S, but 1075R definitely starts earlier than Atlas 1130.
Might not turn as well as Atlas but in light wind is a better performer. The lift on Code R is more abrupt and requires more finesse but for me there is simply no comparison.
