Best GPS watch for Shorerunners and Downwind

Never DW. I assume it’d be good for that

I have a epix gen 2 pro which is basically the same but with an OLED screen. For me a custom activity which is a copy of the windsurfing activity gives me all the right info. But just take a look at the built in activity profiles and find the closest to what you want, then copy it and name it downwinding.

Epix Gen 2 currently. Previously Fenix 6, 5 ,3 and Vivoactive. Garmin has it down! I use the windsurfing app, but there are plenty of custom apps, especially by JMG.

any apps for navigation on watch ultra?

basically… if I want to foil to a specific GPS pin, can it navigate me there (or warn me that I’m getting close / going past it)?

I bet you can do this with workoutdoors on an apple watch. I haven’t done exactly what you are proposing, but It is very customizable and offers maps and good routing tools. Worth playing around with.

Foil Sessions just added a basic navigation feature. You’d be surprised how few apps have this in a sensible format for ocean use.

Good little run down on how to use google earth and work outdoors to create a route on an ultra..

what app on fenix? i find surf app does not track fd wavering well. seems to identify waves when you transition from lying down to standing up. after a no fall session with many waves it registered only 1. in using instinct 2 solar. Thank You.

I found my Garmin really struggled when it came to tracking prone foiling.
Tried wearing it out side my wetsuit, keeping it out of the water etc.
Tried most of the available apps and never had much success.
Foil sessions on the ultra works great for prone, never tried that on the Garmin.

hah! great timing. thanks!

I botched the release and had to pull it from review, so for now the current version only includes the destination arrow, distance, and time to go. If all goes well, the new version with cross-track error should be out on Friday.

Edit: talking about the Foil Sessions app.

Are there any good apps that will work on android galaxy watches? Zef works but looking for something else.

Surf Tracker 3

Had a Garmin Fenix 7 that gave good GPS for prone even under wetsuit sleeve. All buttons died due to rust after 6 month daily prone sessions. Not sure I’ll buy Garmin again.

You mean the buttons are physically stuck right? Unless you’re actually seeing rust, I would bet that’s salt build up. Soaking in warm soapy water for a few hours can resolve that.

any idea which of teh Watershed activities I would choose if im surfing with FoilDrive? ty

I’d log that as JetSurfing!

not sure if you’re making a joke or not I’m trying to figure out what’s the best one to use that will track my waves but using FoilDrive as the assist to get in. I know regular surfing counts the waves based on going from prone position to standing since you’re standing almost the entire time using FoilDrive trying to figure out what’s the best option

No they moved freely without clicking. I always rinsed it. Opened the back and saw all 5 micro-switches completely rusted. Now with Garmin. :crossed_fingers:
