Thanks, can you let me know what the name of the grip stickers you put under your board for paddling upside down
I have made this contraption with Dyneema sheath (for 7-10mm rope) and 3mm bungee.
Ends tied up with dental floss and superglued.
Stretches from (2.7ft)84cm to (+6ft)186cm (5.5, feels small and soft underfoot.
Need 1 or 2 swivels.
Still to be tested but i like how it feels, might end up using this for the wing too.
Nice design! I’ve been using XM Surf leash swivels on my wing leashes for years now and haven’t broken one yet.
Manera makes a smilar bungee style leash that doesn’t bother me too much when standing on it.
I modified mine with a calf-leash cuff to keep it away from my feet and foil even more.
The male velcro on the leash cuffs loves to stick to the bungee so I’ve covered the extra male velcro with some spare female velcro. Hope that makes sense.
To avoid the fraying on dyneema leashes from them contacting the hooks of the Velcro.
Once I find my correct size I just cut or melt with a soldering iron any exposed hook parts of the Velcro so it won’t catch the leash
I like a surf comp leash (5 or 6ft) attached to the waist leash. Board leash behind and wing leash in the front.
I just got my Manera leash, looking forward to trying it. Bit worried about the elastic pinging my board back at me. Is this an issue or is the elastic not strong enong to cause an issue?
I had the Manera 4’5" foil leash and it broke twice!
First time I used it I fell off my board on a small wind swell wave (less than waist height) and the end loop pulled straight out as I landed away from the board. Happened again when I tried it out for a second time, the loop at the other end was pulled out during a fall off the board. Both times it broke I’d been on the water for only a few minutes, so total use of the leash was under 10 minutes.
It seems the stitching of the dyneema rope loops to the webbing is a significant weak point. Beware.
For reference I weigh 63 kg and the wing board was 5.2 kg excluding foil and mast.
I have now made my own board leash using 5mm dyneema rope with a 4mm bungee embedded inside, spliced loops at either end, and a kite surfing harness quick release to attach it to myself.
The leash is around 130cm and can be fully stretched out to 180cm (with the dyneema rope taking the load).
Shoots i just ordered one and now looking at it, that didn’t make me feel good
It looks perfect, proper job!.
I made myself another board leash following the same idea, but with thinner Dyneema rope this time as the previous version was a bit overbuilt. It’s 4mm Dyneema rope with 4mm Dyneema bungee inside.
Tested on Friday and I’m satisfied as it is very light and seems to have less recoil than the coiled leash I had been using.
I had two manera leashes quickly snap on me before the rep gave me one from a second batch that worked great. I always put the ankle cuff on carefully so it won’t snag the leash as much, but removing the outer 1/4” of velcro is brilliant.
Mine just snapped, im getting thicker
I just bought the stock to make myself one of these with sugical tubing inside and amsteel dyneema outside. Will be a fun project. How did you fix the bungee core on the inside to the sheath outside - is that just a knot in the whole business at each end, or did you sew it or what? Also, what is that red thing on the end?
I embedded the bungee inside the Dyneema rope and did a loop around the outside of the Dyneema in a knot at either end to hold it in position. I hid the tied ends back inside the Dyneema rope. You could also sew the ends inside the rope to ensure they won’t unravel.
The red plastic part is a kitesurfing quick release which I use to attach the leash to a harness line. You pull the red part away from you to release the leash in case you need to quickly separate from the board.
Yup This happened to mine yesterday. I had to tie it to my ankle cuff so I wouldn’t have to cut my sesh short. My friends one did the same. I’ve also had the cuff whip off from sticking to the rope. Bit crap really. Think I’m going to get a Koahi leash…
@slashdotdash wow! Both my dad (who has been sailing and splicing for 70 year) and I are impressed with your job. I figured out how to splice the Dyneema back on itself, but can’t figure out how you secured the bungee cord. If u can share any more insight on how u secured, and hid the bungee that would be appreciated. Otherwise I might run my first iteration as a hack with a simple bowline at each end of leash. I guess I could see the Dyneema and bungee back on itself, then whip it, then glue the whole thing…but bowline seems better.
I had the bungee embedded into the Dyneema with both ends of the bungee pulled out. Then I wrapped each end of the bungee around the Dyneema and then pulled it back inside so that it was tied around itself in a knot, a bit like a figure of eight.
The Dyneema must take the strain when the leash is pulled and fully extended (otherwise the bungee will snap). The bungee only really has to recoil the leash.
