Slick Foil is an aftermarket motor pod for Foil Drive. I believe it is the best design out there.
I am seeking fellow Unifoil riders to build interest in having one built to fit Progression 800. The best way to express interest in either here or on his IG page. Check it out. The photos speak for themselves.
No affiliation. I just want one. I have offered to send in my mast for fitting.
This company already makes one for that mast. The owner foils in the area and I know he has that mast done even though I don’t see it on his website yet
Zip pod is awesome. Can personally vouch for it. The designer is a mechanical engineer in the defense industry. This is a passion project for him. It has made a dramatic improvement in the breach performance for my motor pod vs the stock pod. I run the pod short on my mast and used to struggle on choppy days with ventilation bogging me down. No longer an issue with the zip pod which is awesome. Stock pod would cause a nose down deflection when it touched down at speed on a wave and that is gone as well. It mounts very easily and it’s rock solid. Highly recommend.
Ahoy, thanks for the endorsement. I’m Brad, grew up in Vilano Bch skimboarding and live here on the Space Coast of Florida now. Forgive me for always browsing the forums but never actually signing up and engaging. I made the Zip Pod earlier this year when a friend was complaining about the flexibility of the nanopod when the motor would dip in the water. I recently completed some cantilever testing (like we do with space antenna graphite tube assemblies), with all else the same, that shows the zip pod is 4x as stiff as the nanopod or anything with that same kind of rubber strap, and that it actually returns to zero when unloaded instead of sticking in a weird position not parallel to the board. It has true mechanical redundancy, only needing two of the three zip ties to be functional. My bigfoot friend tried to pry it off with his hands to no avail, and once we cut it off he tried to smash it with a 5 pound sledge on the concrete. I’ve put 20 years of experience in designing your Siriusxm radio satellites and Viasat signals to your airplane Wi-fi repeaters into this little motor mount because no one needs to pay $2k to have a drag-free single use product.
I think you’d be interested in the testing shown on this page here (it’s a quick summary video) LINK. I have no data to hide and I’m open to ANY other testing suggestions. Would love to give you the chance to hate my product, I think you would be hard pressed to. I rode it back to back against the Armstrong performance mast within 10 minutes of each other and can genuinely say the performance was the same. Head over to my http://zippod.net page or @Zip-Pod on facebook (currently has all the pics and videos). I’m still putting up the product pages and YES, I have a unique SKU for Progression 800 w/ V1 or V2/HP/Fusion or Flipsky (DIY) motors.
I’m not going to shit on any specific product, but you’ll never find me using 3D printed plastic in long-term tension. I can show you fracture pictures of a legacy “mini” pod if you want.
Hi, the pod looks really nice. Although it would bother me to change the Zip ties every other month. Have you looked into stainless teal zip ties and amybe tried them? Like these for example Edelstahlbinder mit Kugelfixierung 4,6 x 360 mm
I think Brad is being conservative with the 1 mo recommendation. I bet they last significantly longer without issue. But he is the mechanical engineer…
I like the Zip Pod but I’m a bit skeptical of relying on zip ties when I routinely remove them with a knife and often with just a wack. The Slick Pod seems much more durable. I am probably going to send him my mast so he can make one for Uni Progression 800. If anyone else is interested, let me know.
I will say there’s a ton of guys in our county that foil, about 70 (prone, wing, DW, FD, dock). Probably 12+ (of that 70) foil drive daily… pretty sure they’re all on zip pods. I prone and see them all the time. They all seem to rave about it
Yeah I’m one of the local guys on the zip pod and I’ve been tasked with trying to destroy it for the last few months. I was on a 2-strap proto and I couldn’t come close to phasing it after using it religiously for two months. No strap flexing or noticeable wear at all (and now he has three straps for extra redundancy). I pump and link waves a lot and really love cranking and banking, so this new found efficiency is now an absolute must. I put it at the top of my list for riding enjoyment (probably above my trench board in importance). It really is amazing to be able to dip at speed with minimal penalty.
I’m sure there’s other brands with similar gains, but I can only vouch for what I’ve tried. The zip pod is bomb proof and an amazing upgrade for every foil assist rider. I’m pretty sure he has brand specific models for just about every major mast on the market. Get one and start laying down those carves!
Good point on the overall upgrade. You don’t need to get a zip pod but definitely look into some sort of mini pod. It’s a very noticeable upgrade in performance. Just look at the relative difference in surface area, that directly relates to a reduction in drag. I barely feel when the pod touches down now.
Guessing the integrated mast sales might take a hit as a result but I think it’s an overall benefit to FD as a whole. I see FD warning about warranty but I just can’t see how a well designed pod is going to be an issue for the motor. My pod is rock solid on the mast.
