Foil drive - Gen 1 vs Gen 2

Hi Eric, what kind of board and foil were you running, and are you using the same now that you’re getting up ok? And how heavy are you?
This might help others who are considering getting into this.

Yes I have the Max. I just added the sport battery. Again, the weighting is a bit different, just have to adjust. I got to try one before buying and on he first wave got a pumping 3 for 1.

Hey Geoff, late to the party here, but am I understanding correctly that you are prone foil driving Lyall Bay in onshore conditions and having a great time? I’m based in Chch where we get predominant onshore conditions and do a fair bit of wing foiling at the beach. It gets pretty treacherous launching the board and wing when the shore break is 3ft+ so the idea of being able to take a FD out the back and ride the lumps is pretty appealing to me.

Hi there! Well, great time is a relative thing in 20-30 knots and I avoid Lyall Bay as it’s largely a closeout/shallow sandbar environment, but yes, I’m riding a lot of onshores on my FD Gen1+ and having a good time. I certainly wouldn’t be proning without it and if the wind ever gets below 20 knots then yes, it’s a great time! :slightly_smiling_face:

So you still have the Gen1+? I’m going to have to try both for a test drive to see for myself.

The Gen2 has more power but there’s a lot more expense if it breaks.
I had one and went back to the Gen1. I need a wave to get up with little boards and little foils but eg a small 3 foot front wave was enough to get me up in smooth conditions on a KT 700 Nomad / 190 rear and the Gen 1 with a Magic Hub had ample power to keep me on foil and get me up again if I touched down.
The KT Nomads have amazing bottom end and my fastest recorded on-wave speeds as well.
