What is the best foil assist?

  • Foil Drive fusion
  • Manta
  • Duotone Foil Assist
  • Waydoo Boost
  • AMPJet
  • Tow boogie

Boogie technically shouldn’t count, because it’s not a foil assist - it’s actually a gift from heaven. It is the nectar of the gods.

Where is the diy foil assist option?!

Tow is only good in glassy conditions. Assists are heavy as shit. Backpacks are maybe ok. Amp meh

Winch is the answer. My summer project.

Best foil assist is a paddle.

Boogie does fine in all conditions I have used it in, just a little more challenging to maneuver in washy short period wind swell to keep it from hopping out of the water. I also had a WindUpWinch for a bit (got wet and stopped working), had to be anchored on the beach though. Was cool in theory but couldn’t pull me up (70kg) like the boogie can on a small volume board. The Boogie is amazing and hands down the best all around in my opinion bc you can ride a small board with no added weight to it, plus the battery lasts 2-3 hours.

They all have their place and most of them have places they shouldn’t be. I’d say amp jet is the only one that you can use just about anywhere but it obviously has shortcomings too. I have both foil drive and two amp boards. Still would prefer to prone.

Amp baby. Quiet and hidden. The assist that no one knows you are getting or gets annoyed about.

I don’t think everyone would agree that the fusion is the best FD.

Couldn’t agree more!!

For me it’s gotta be amp.

Why you ask……

No pod dipping.

Weight exactly where it should be.

Batteries last longer than I can foil (we have lots of point breaks where we walk back to the take off)
For the price you get assist and unassisted options with a board that others don’t offer
I’m mainly a prone foiler. Also wing and downwind a bit. Can do all on the amp. Easy to set up. Swap cartridge with one screw. No maintenance/oiling/greasing required = more water time & less to worry about

Tow boogie would be my second. But we got lots of cliffs to no fun to carry down to the beach.

Yup amp best IMO. But only if you can prone. Feels much better on foil than FD. Boogie epic idea but totally banned here. Would like to try duotone though attached to battery if something goes wrong hmmmmm

Ha ha. Nup. We both foil but that’s about where the similarities end.

I’d be interested to hear how you compare the two having owned both - strengths and weaknesses, usage cases. Can the Amp allow pop up on even the smallest of non breaking waves?

I have a FD but only use it for conditions that I can’t get a prone chip into. I use it in prone assist style, so paddle assist holding the controller in my mouth and then chip in using a bump. At 40% cruise for paddle and 65% limit for chips I can get a 90 minute session out of one max battery. I’m thinking with that usage style it probably suits an Amp more than a FD!

The way it sounds like you are using your foil drive I think the amp would be a really good fit.

Once you get the timing and technique dialed in the amp it’s pretty crazy how small of a bump you can chip into. I can easily catch a wave that never even breaks on the 4-6 at 75kg. Probably have to size up one foil size compared to my normal prone board.

After a week straight on a normal prone board it does take me a bit to get used to the weight of the amp and I definitely can pump my prone board better. But it still feels more like prone than foil drive does.

The only instance I prefer foil drive is in a location where I’m essentially replacing a jet ski. The amp isn’t going to do that for you.

I haven’t gotten to downwind the amp but I could see it being pretty epic.

Why did you not include foil drive GEN2 HP?

I am not sure that everyone agrees that the fusion is better than Gen 2.

Probably too heavy for the Gen 2, it is best under 85-90 kgs.

I vote DIY.
