I’m not really sure whats the best for me. I was thinking about dock start, but my location isnt very good for this. I get the point that it would built a good foundation and its fun, also just for getting a feeling being on foil and the easy transport. But i like the feeling to SUP and being on “open water” and last years it was a bit kinda “boring” to only SUP. Later with skill i’d be down try to DW, since it seems i already need a DW setup for flat water. Unfortunately ocean is too far for me. I’m still thinking about buying a dock start board, but the big negative thing for me is that i’m very limited where i could do that.
I’ve come across the Gong NOTW 8.3 quite often, but what makes me hesitant is, firstly, its width (as I understand it, inflatables are inherently more unstable) and, secondly, the manufacturer’s skill level rating. At 80 kg, I’d already be in the expert category, which makes me very uneasy, especially since many people here (unfortunately) advised me against using an inflatable.
Which range of length and width would you recommend? Im very excited about my first few sessions.
Evening, after LaPaloude mentioned the “Gong Foil Trail V3 - Alu 70” set, I took a closer look.
It seems suitable for my purposes and is still within my budget. I’m still looking for a used one, but the new price is also acceptable.
Since there are many different opinions/tips here, I have another question:
Based on what I’ve read and seen, the following configuration would be ideal for me (from my beginner’s perspective):
Front wing XL 135 - 1940cm² (9.4 ratio)
Back wing XL 239cm²
It comes with a 70cm (no other size available) aluminum mast (19mm).
Again, I’m unsure because some have recommended a smaller front wing, and the set is also described as a “dock start” (but also a SUP foil).
Thanks for your opinions.
Thought you needed inflatable.
f you have the room and transport go for a rigid…it is better in the water, period.
The thing is, an inflatable would still be ideal since I’m not limited in where I ride.
I didn’t think the difference between a hardboard and an inflatable would be so big, but it seems to make a significant difference, and I’ve only been considering this alternative since starting this forum. Of course, I’m still a bit undecided because I like to have more freedom in choosing locations… I’m still weighing my options. Did you learn on an inflatable yourself?
I flatstart the trail xl front and a large tail with the 70cm aluminium on the lake, I had a 7’9” x22” and could get close to up but replaced it with 8’4” x21.5” gator and can fly briefly now.
Longer is better, it’s great fun and very challenging, gong gear seems great for my standard.
I’m 63 and 75kg with gear and a few years supsurf before foiling.
