How many foilers do you foil with when you're out foiling?

I’m the only one at my spot, how about y’all?
I occasionally travel to different spots and foil with others, but usually it’s just me and the crab traps. (and the amused towns folk film and cheer me on from the beach)
I’ve been on this forum a year now, and it’s been really helpful to learn about all the fancy new gear I won’t buy and trends and gear fixes I may need!

usually between 2-8, though ‘with’ might be generous since we rarely end up sitting near each other in the line up.

zero…just one other foiler ever

Hey… small tangent… but I was surfing with my best buddy in 2022 in NZ when he had a cardiac arrest in the surf due to AFIB. I saved him - put him on my board and paddled him to the beach - and 20 mins later there as a doctor walking his dog on the beach that stabilised him. Anyway, point is… shit happens. Please, guys, NEVER SURF, WING OR FOIL ALONE. x

I am absolutely flabbergasted by the fact that I am 99% of the time the only foiler at my local. There is plenty or room for me in between peaks away from the surfers of the beach break even though there can be a hundred surfers lined up and down the mile long stretch of beach. I started regularly surfing here 25 years ago, then switched to SUP, and switched to SUPfoiling 8 years ago. I’m out there all the time and I know all the regulars. There are days that surfers aren’t getting anything and I’m zooming around having a ball. How can that many people see what we’re doing and not think - that looks fun, maybe I should try that?

Surfers often say to me “that looks so fun. How hard is it to learn?” When I say it will take you a year to get into the waves, and three years + to get good. Oh, and the gear costs $5K used. They kinda loose interest…

So far, 1 person max, but usually solo where I live. But there are a couple friends working towards SUP DW…hopefully by winter!

$5K used gear what?

Wing gear. Not just prone.

In my local I have yet to see another foiler at the same time as me. There’s another spot in which today we were 4 foilers (2 jet skis, 1 SUP and 1 prone).
But for wingfoiling I’ve seen maybe 6 or 7 at the same time.

It is 100% going to grow a big amount, I really hope it doesn’t get crowded to the point it starts being uncomfortable.

I’m the only person in my area on a foil. Unless I travel, I am foiling alone. When waves OK, my friend is with me on a surfboard. I had a foiling hat trick the other day. Morning foil surf, then kite foil, finished with 8.5 mile downwinder. Never saw another person out the entire day.

That’s the worst question to ask, how hard is something…ugh…if someone asks that question they are doubting their abilities immediately and it’s hard for me to even get motivated to explain foiling to them. When someone asks, “how do I start”, those are the ones that are serious.

These days the gear is so much better. I started having a lot of fun around 30 sessions into SUPfoil surfing, but that was a long time ago. I bet you could have fun 5-10 sessions these days with the right equipment matched to size and conditions
