Thought I’d get some other opinions before I put more work into this. I decided to build a pump scoot board out of leftover plywood (Baltic birch) in my garage. The short of it is, it’s gonna be too heavy. I’m trying to decide what I should rout out from the inside to save weight and what I need to keep for stiffness. I have plenty of extra fiberglass, no carbon, and resin/hardener. The board currently weighs 9.6 lbs (4.4 kg)
That weight is with the deck, but obviously weight will get added when glassing. I should shed some weight when sanding the rails and getting it ready to glass but any recs for where else I could cut weight would be appreciated. If anyone thinks it’s hopeless I’d love to know why as well.
I’ve tried the roam scoot foil board and the heaviness really bothered me (I was riding it without the handle attached). I think if you want to DIY it you need to use Paulownia. A friend made a few normal pump boards out of it and they are a bit on the heavy side but not too bad at all.
That’s what I was thinking. I actually have some Paulownia too, but I was so sure I could make plywood light enough if I hollowed out enough sections. It’s been so much more work than I anticipated.
How about plywood only on the deck and stringer, then foam/glass on the bottom. That way you could cut the rails off and save that weight and the weight of the bottom plywood skin. Just fill all the voids with foam/eps, shape some rails and glass.
The mast and handlebars can still attach to the wood stringer.
