Pump foil board weight

I am just finishing my first pump foil board.I made it with xps core, and reinforced with five wood stringers. It has high density foam track box and i installed a little box in the front for handlebar (aka foilscoot). Its weights 3,7kg so its heavier obviously because i put more stringers and carbon than i should:) I like to play it safe but now i wonder is it too heavy? Please share your thoughts.

My dock start board is 2.99kg. It will be fine. Dock starts are typically for just workouts anyway

thnks mate! Is it a diy or production? I see that Dutone pumping board is around 2,9kg…

My third diy Pump Board was still over 3 kg. And now my diy board is 2.4kg… I think your body weight and fitness is a bigger factor. Building light and strong is difficult, I think it’s normal to build a few boards where you figure things out!

it will work but its too heavy

mad props for the foilscoot addition. way to go

honestly, the magic of pump foiling happens with really short boards. I think it is the total rotational moment of inertia that matters the most, weight second. No matter how heavy it is, the board it going to come up under your feet as you unweight it.

This.

A heavy downwind board will affect pumping, but if it’s small it doesn’t matter that much. Plenty of people are using the “home depot special” solid plywood board with a coat of epoxy.

weight is also affected by how you start. if you do a push start, heavier boards lose height in the water faster (though can have more momentum too, maintaining lift). this translates into smaller margin of error during take off with heavier boards.

Thanks all for the answers.I took a bit weird and dificult path into foiling with making my own equipement but i like that challenge. My board is 90x40cm.Probably i could make lighter pumping board with plywood…i have tons of ideas for future projects.I knew iit will be too heavy when i put that much stringers but i decided to finish it anyway.Foilscoot seems like very helpful thing so my plan is learn first with handlebars than without.I also made complete mast, wings, fuselage out of plywood and carbon so everything is a bit heavier than it should be, but i am not looking for performance, just wanted to make sure it doesnt break under me:)I asume its going to be more dificult to learn on my equipment but ill give it a try and if it doesnt work ill buy a foil at least.Ill post some results as soon as i test it. thanks all!

Yea,thats right mate!So question is do you feel a big difference now with the lighter board?

No not much. I also regularly try the lighter set ups from my friends (axis 1401) idont go longer with these. The thing that keeps me from pumping more than 1-3 minutes is fitness and body weight. Maybe it improved by 5% …

Thanks, that is very interesting to hear.

I made many board and tread a lot as well
Everything more then 2.4 is too heavy for many , light board can change the feeling from the board a lot

can you post pics?

some work in progress pics, actually board is allready laminated and everything else you see has one “cosmetic layer of carbon fiber”. Ill post some new pics in few days time.

So its finnaly finished, total weight is cca 10kg.Wing,mast and stabiliser have wood core because plan was to use fiberglass only, like clearwater kit.It just didnt feel stiff enough to me so i ad alot of carbon.Havent tried it yet i still have to install scooter steering wheel because i think it wil be alot easier to learn that way.Ive never tried foiling of any kind so this is an unusual path to foiling.Shape and construction is done all by hand and i did everything based on looking at photos and videos of manufacturers. So fingers crossed haha:)
