I have a 770R where the back screw hole on the fuse is stripped out. Anyone dealt with this and have recommendation? I’ve tried screwing in longer screws lightly just to see if I can get something to bite but nothing.

happened to a demo 1130s i got from a shop, code warrantied it, try reaching out. heard of other guys using helicoil
Code recommended Helicoil. Looks pretty easy to do.
Hey Dan,
I’m curious if you made the repair and how it went.
I ordered the helicoil kit Amazon.com: fixinus 30 Piece M6 x 1.0mm Thread Repair Insert Kit, Stainless Steel Thread Repair Kit Helicoil Coil Compatible Hand Tool Set for Auto Repair : Automotive and was prepping the hole running a tap into the hole. Then drilled out the top portion and was preparing to drill out the helicoil. I blew out the hole with air and took a 30 mm bolt to run it through. It seemed to grab pretty good so I then tried connecting the tail portion of the fuse and it grabbed good so I decided not to mess with a good thing. That’s been a couple weeks and it’s still has good bite.
If the opportunity ever arises I have the tools and know how to do it now. Would be nice to have a drill press accessible though to keep the hole straight.
I have the same problem with the 860R. I received a helicoil kit as well. Do you have a link to a YouTube tutorial? I’m a little nervous about doing this (for example, how to get the faulty helicoil out)
Thanks
I am not a Code rider but look at their stuff on my brothers facebook. On July 23, there was a post about these bolts stripping out. Cliffnotes, the fuse connection uses 30mm bolts and the mast to front wing uses the 25mm. The carbon fiber is threaded in the beginning of the fuse hole. There is a metal insert that is farther down that the 30mm screws should thread into but not the 25mm screws. The threaded carbon fiber material will strip out if the 25 mm screws are accidentally used. Even if you install the heli-coils, I would still make sure that you use the correct length 30mm screws down into the factory threaded insert.
I don’t have video. I watched a few but the takeaway was getting the hole drilled straight. There’s a lot of angles on the fuse to work with.
I’ve got a horror story for you. My 100 kg buddy in the Gorge, failed to read the instructions and didn’t use the longest screws to attach his fuse. I think more than a few fail to read the instructions. He’s out on the river and his fuse completely vanished. After a long swim back, we notice when the short screws ripped out of the carbon fiber threads, the prying action as they ripped out, destroyed the front wing too. It tore the crap out of it. He had to buy new front wing, fuse, and tail. Expensive mistake. How did we confirm he used the short screws….we found his long screw attaching the mast.
Poor choice by code on this matter. A buddy of mine was also using it backwards.
It seems like in most cases 30mm works in the mast. Too bad they didn’t ensure 30mm worked in all masts (maybe it does?) and just ship with 30mm for both mast and fuse connection. Would have saved a lot of setups if seems.
I have the drill press. Glad you fixed it.
