Can anyone articulate why these boards pump so well?

Probably because how light they are and how well balanced the weight distribution is. The nose and the tail are not bulky as on some other shapes, and it helps not only for pumping - while doing any kind of direction changes these boards feel like much smaller boards.

For a given volume, a narrower/taller board needs less carbon/glass than a wider thinner board.
