So been foiling for almost 3 years…and I’m at the point where I feel like the waves aren’t good enough for performance foiling.
I have the 850 sk8, and 750 sk8. I’m finding that waves aren’t really that great anymore for top to bottom foiling in SoCal/progression. My style is more turns and carves preferred than pumping…I am starting to feel that 3year shelf life post hit….
I think the only thing left is more carves, turns, and….AIRs..
But that’s it right? Like we’ve hit the peak…? I’m starting to feel like most waves aren’t top to bottom here in SoCal, or are super short waves in general……unless you’re near surf spots..which are more fun now to me…and still not that great?
Ive notice here in SoCal I prefer the beachbreaks on the mid tides now over reef. Less backwash, more top to bottom and glide. The first few years i was only looking for the high tide spots with the easier chip-ins. If you find a healthy sandbar with good shape at the beachbreaks youll be happy again.
Once I started foiling I realized So Cal is actually pretty bad for surfing in general. Almost never “world class” conditions and pretty crumbly overall. Lowers is about the only wave that is reliably rippable. The saving grace is waves everyday, especially for us foilers.
As to your progression stall it may be time for a motorized solution. A couple months ago LAFC had a meetup at San O and there were quite a few tow boogies with foilers that were absolutely ripping mush. The tow boogie has so much power they can get away with sub 700 front wings and just whip in with a ton of speed and carve super tight lines.
Yes. Yes they do. I think the problem is when you’re only foiling you start to miss hitting the lip. Also getting barreled. But mainly hitting the lip. So you have to go back to surfing every so often. Remind yourself you can still do that. Get frustrated with crowds. Then foiling is fun again.
It’s been eight years foiling for me. What am I going to do now. Go back to surfing every session? No thanks. Wind will come back eventually right? Right?!?!?!
i think this might be the path..I realized the backwash with reefs make me lose soo much speed pumping and I’ve found beachbreaks great, however the next issue is the walls that comes up. I think i’m complaining too much but these west swells are soo annoying right now at the moment
You only have to watch the first 3 seconds of this YouTube to understand that this is what surfing in LA is like. It explains why all foilers are going lithium ion assist if possible. 2 zerotows at Countyline are typical. 4-8 + FD’s at Mondos are found most every day. It’s just very crowded now. When does the wind come back?
Yes, but the waves are good. Nor-Cal is like that now at all known spots and on the roads to get there, and the waves are not as reliably good. Due to 3 middle aged ogresses leap frogging me at Lindamar as they are “locals” on a wave I’ve been surfing as a desperation spot off an on for the last 30 years… I just purchased this hat!
