A friend loaned me his new foil (which he bought last fall and never rode) and I got home, unsheathed it, and immediately noticed it appears to have been sanded through to the foam core and then clear coated over. There’s an obvious depression in this location too.
I’m tempted to take it for a spin just to see what damage like this feels like but does anyone already know what the consequence of something like this is?
*Edit: Boardbuilding group had solid answers. Got the info needed!
That’s some serious qc lapse. If you got it for free, then it’s probably fine. You could glass on a patch for good measure. If you paid money for it, I’d demand an exchange. If they shine you, then throw’em under the bus!
No one is getting thrown under the bus. I’m sure the brand will take care of my buddy. I’m just genuinely curious about how it would feel on the water. I’m fascinated by gear defects and what we can and cannot feel.
I personally can’t imaging I’d feel this but let us know if you get it wet. I have a similar spot on a 13AR foil. It’s on the bottom though and closer in towards the center. Theres now a 1" crack that’s developing right through it perpendicular to the span Still use it and can’t tell the difference, hasn’t been growing. It’s long out of warranty but if yours isn’t I’d get it replaced.
Got it in the water and sure enough, couldn’t feel it at all. Did some big tip breaches, pushed it for speed, had some funky breaches that I recovered from. Foil never let me down. Pretty cool.
