Trash-Bags (Parawing Lounge)

How much difference is that really doing in 15+ knots?

I had a gong pluse v1 5m. It what I learned with. As more time goes on the better I think it was. Since then I have used many PWs (Maliko, KANAHA, frigate, etc..). Wasn’t sticky for me at all. very stable, pulls like a truck, easy to stay upwind

IMO the only issue with that wing is the material is thick and packing it up takes more space than the others. Double the BRMs

really? where are the details of this deal? is it online?

how do you connect it to your harness?

Would love to try a gong plus made from the BRM cloth. Your 5m pulled like a truck in even 10-12mph wind

The down sides were the weight and stability. Ut was heavy enough that I t fell from the sky during light wind transitions. And the trim allowed you to overfly it which would lead to a collapse. But it’s still the most low end power I have felt from a pw.

It was more stable than my BRMs IMO. The day you flew it was light wind. Wind range was too small and too much material were the issues imo (talking about the gong plus v1

It’s less reactive to fly than the BRM, which I could see as easier to fly. But I found it easier to overfly and collapse the canopy when depowered off the front lines. The BRM v1 does this too but the Gong was even easier to get to overfly. This tuning also helped it go upwind easier as well so it’s a trade off

hmmm…. the ones that i tried were the Gong Neutra model (5m, 4m). pretty much every single wing tip touchdown resulted in a crash.

Interview with Naish parawing designer

Seems that the material is really not designed to get wet, and that these early models will not last at all, but there were some interesting insights around the design process, cost, tradeoffs.

Also interesting that someone with admittedly very little technical expertise on paragliders and their design (Ewan correct me if I’m wrong here) was able to build a “best of the season” parawing purely by doing iterations and focussing on what it feels like to use. Obvious point being that it’s “very early” in the evolution.

Edit: not to take anything away from the process and the breakthroughs they’ve had, clearly a huge amount of effort in making their parawing as balanced as possible from 50kg to 100kg rider in all wind ranges and all styles. I think this is the key ingredient to where they’ve excelled is focussing on performance across all aspects of the riding process.

@foiltheworld had a good podcast episode with @Tanner.0 In an effort to make him spend more money, let’s convince him to buy a parawing.

Caveat: I have only used my flow dwing 4.2m 4 times. 3 times with a DW board and big DW foil. Once with my normal wing gear: Omen Flux 60L and Omen Operator 1050, 87cm mast. I do not own a belt since I plan on using it to lap our right hand point breaks. I will only be stowing it for maybe 20 seconds at a time. Doesn’t seem worth the effort. I could be wrong on that.

1st session. Lake with 18-20 MPH gusty lake conditions. DW board. No issues at all. Got on foil and immediately went upwind. Never once felt like I was going to get stuck downwind the whole session.

2nd session: Ocean in 18-20 MPH wind. Flat water, no real waves, minimal bumps. DW board and foil. Still easy, no idea why Dave West thought it was hard. Did have 20 minutes where I struggled, but overall fine. Never was scared I would be stuck DW. Getting back on board and to my feet kept repeating slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

3rd session: 18+MPH wind. DW board. Same as above. It’s not hard. Made a couple collapse into my hand and redeploys successfully.

4th session: 22+MPH. Since it was for sure good wind I used my standard wing gear and man was it fun. The first successful collapse, ride unbroken swell line all the way to beach and redeploy back out was amazing. Turns out a hand wing has a huge amount of drag when it’s luffing. Even a Fone strike which is the best hand wing I’ve used in the waves.

The rumors that parawings don’t go upwind are not true at all anymore. From the Flow Dwing and forward I would say that they all go upwind as well or sometimes better than a wing. The sizing is very similar to a hand wing size. To learn I would suggest a 4.x size. Wait for true wind to learn. They don’t stay in the air if there isn’t enough wind. Use big gear to learn and it’s easy. If you see Flow/Ozone/BRM single skin for roughly $500, I say don’t hesitate to buy one.

EDIT: Oh, the tangles aren’t really that bad. Anyone who has ever kited will have no issue. If you’ve never kited, listen to some foilrat or Xfoils podcasts about it. Easy enough to figure out. I’ve never had to swim it in yet.

Hahaha appreciate the shoutout. Brian is a legend, very humbling to be invited on.

Para might as well stand for “paid another rent amount” with how much some companies (BRM) are charging for those things.

Really good info @Hdip as a former kiter current winger you’re selling me on the learning curve.

Anyone having success on the para with the wider potato shaped wing boards? Would love to get into it without buying another board - I’ve already got a prone, a 45L midlength, and an 80L (KT Quattro) wing board.

If you’re riding a little powered then it’s no problem, potato boards work great, I’ve had some great sessions on an old 5x23 60L F-One Rocket

bah no fun your first session you need to go out in 12MPH like the rest of us to truly experience the parawing

My parawing isn’t going upwind any better.

@Tanner.0 One of my buddies is getting into PW on his Drifter 4. The issue I observe is that it takes him more power to get going and once he’s up, appears overpowered. He seems fine with it. I really kind of hate being overpowered on PW. I would always rid lit when I kitesurfed and used to like being powered up on hand wings.

I initially found my flow D wing to feel pretty unmanageable in strong winds (been using a 55L Armstrong wing board, so needing quite a bit more wind to get up than to cruise). After a few sessions though it seems pretty manageable with a fairly fast foil (high aspect, ~1000cm²). Was out recently in around 15-30knots with the 4.2 and had a great time. Was noticing the depower/sheet out makes the front half of the parawing shrink a lot. Super basic harness line helped too, for me just a string from belt to loop around top end of the bar for now.

If your trying to go cross wind it’ll flap somewhat aggressively, but pointing steeply upwind you can really sheet in, lean into the power and make great headway smoothly. Obviously a midlength with displacement hull is better, but if you don’t mind being lit winging the flow PW isn’t much different and totally doable with smaller boards if the wind is right.
