What’s up with hats?

I wear a visor for two reasons. Neither of which are for the Kool Factor. I’m lucky there is still a fair amount of “lettuce” on the top of my head. The visor also lets me wear it around my neck if the wind comes up beyond “hat on head” speed.

Firstly it allows me to keep some of the sun and sometimes rain out of my eyes. I have yet to find a set of “sunnies” that don’t fog up or water spot.

Secondly when pumping up on foil the brim keeps the harness line from catching me in the face.

Your mileage may vary.

Happy Holidays to One and All!

What kind of question is that? Hat always was and will be for sun protection. Surfers don’t use because they duck dive. Pretty obvious to me. If you use to look cool better look out for another sport

A couple trips to the clinic for stitches made me a convert to the hat and bump cap.

The function is definitely there. It’s cool from a prone standpoint, as there are only so many reasonable accessories we can use. Adds some style!

Plenty of surfers wear hats and particularly common with the hipsters in hotter areas.

I personally have worn a bucket hat for 20 years in the surf and i only ditch it when the surf gets solid with lots of duck diving.

Surf wisdom i would pass on to younger folk.
Always wear a brimmed hat in and out of the surf in sunny climates.
Protect your ears in cold weather. I use a hood.

Surf foiling lends itself to hats as the surf is typically small so why not. You would never go back once your use to it.

for the duck divers out there!

Not so great for protecting eyes and face.

Let the record show OG poster retains a glorious, voluptuous full head of curly locks. Also enjoys extensive follicle coverage with no signs and/or indication of losing inventory, likely never. Said poster obviously has no understanding of the physical, psychological and emotional ramifications of low/out -going tide on top of the dome.

surprised no one has brought up the orange downwind hat that only the most hardcore downwind foiler pros are wearing. the only people ive seen wearing it are Kane, Adam, Oskar, and others at that caliber. I have a feeling that all the beginners will be wearing orange hats very soon.

Those orange hats are actually not bought anywhere. Once you ace a 50km run, the orange hat seemingly sprouts from their scalps. It’s an organic process.

I was in California about a long time ago and saw a guy wearing a Gath Helmet. I got one for the Florida Sun protection with the full visor. It protects the whole head from Sun and spray into the eyes. Keeps my head cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. I just look like Darth Vader but I am old enough I dont care what I look like. I just do not want to get skin cancer. I have worn it for over 15 years. Great for foil protection also.

my foil hat is to stop those dam aliens from reading my thoughts.

Keeps sun out of my eyes and off my face and I rarely need to duck dive in my local foiling conditions. Also, I pledge allegiance to the foil and all that instagram tells me is cool about it.

Wore a hat yesterday with this discussion in mind… pumped 4x further 4x faster ripping 4x harder. Wear a hat

Hats are common sense and the resistance to them is probably from the surf community who are way too cool and fashion conscious for anything practical.

some of the best in the world wear hats or something close

I used to have a chin strap that clips to a baseball/trucker hat with suspenders style clips and was like an inch wide so pretty comfortable but I can’t find another online. Anyone see something like that anywhere?
