What’s up with hats?

Zoomers and or millennials are frustrated with how much time they have to spend taking care of relatives with an assortment of avoidable ailments. We don’t want to be stuck at home dying, we’d rather be out foiling when we are our parents age!

I blame it on Alex Aguerra for sending me a Gofoil hat with my foil order, which fits deeper on the head and doesn’t tend to fall off with crash and high wind.

I wear a hat for sun reasons and always wished i could surfing. But in surfing hats suck for duck diving, but more so because on the bottom turns and barrels you lose viz the lip. With foiling you’re higher with a different angle so you never lose viz on the wave. I also tuck my ears under as they’ve already had a lifetime of sun…. You also fall less in the impact zone foiling.

Matthieu Etxebarne Aguirregomezkorta on Instagram: "Yesterday at Jaws, on a Foil fall my foil blew my head off very violently. Once underwater, my life vest didn’t work, so I spent two waves underwater before surfacing many seconds later and much further away from where I fell !! I was close to the rocks and there was a lot of blood around me. Luckily, my friend @pierre_rollet_ came to get me and was able to call for help and get me back to port very quickly! 🙏 Once help arrived and after he’d performed first aid, my maui mom @marielaureditte came to get me and helped me enormously to do all the care as quickly as possible with @modo_md ... Many thanks to her for her kindness and benevolence on a daily basis 🙌 In the afternoon, while trying to get my foil back, I fell while climbing the cliff and crashed into some rocks. I was really scared... So my elbows, wrists, hips, legs... etc. are very damaged... my body hurts all over... But I try to put things in perspective, there are always worse things in life... I’ll just have to spend some time out of the water. Many thanks to @marielaureditte @pierre_rollet_ @modo_md for their help, I’m very grateful! Happy new year to all! Urte berri on 🙌" (Not Safe For Work Warning for a cut on the head)

I am really hoping that surfing and foiling start to become like skiing/snowboarding where 90% of people wear them. There’s no reason not to wear one. Takes about 3 sessions to get used to it.

At 38 I definitely fit the ven diagram and definitely since early 30s stopped caring what I looked like out there in pretty much anything I do. Having fun and protecting skin, eyes down the road is just as important.

Hat, Neo pants, and hooded sun shirt for our conditions.

And most of our surfers are loggers around here, they all do the same. Short board waves are rare unless you really want to work for it and have a 10 second ride.

Found a good one - 3M Bump Cap

It has a bump cap insert, lots of reflective and is super high vis.

The bump cap insert is removable and fits perfectly in a normal surf hat.

The only shortcoming is no chin strap, but the back strap sits really low and the peak is quite short, so it fits snug with or without the insert. Pretty stoked for $10
