(Writing for a shy friend)…LOL
Question ? I’m currently riding Unifoil progression wing, 125 daily driver with foil drive.
I’m currently using Cedrus aluminum mast. I have nothing to compare to, but my rig is heavy
And seems heavier after a session, as it also holds water.
Thinking about upgrading, Unifoil has:
a. aluminum mast
b. progression
c. Katana
Is it worth the money for carbon upgrade. Which mast should I pick?
Axis masts always leak. Just empty it. Clean it with fresh water. Let dry. Plug ends with a piece of foam, then cover in 5-minute epoxy. Will never leak again.
The 125 is a fast wing, the benefit of a mast upgrade will be very noticeable. The upgrade from a katana to the T80 was noticeable on that setup, I cant imagine how much the Alu Cedrus is slowing it down.
If you are going to exclusively FD, I’d consider the integrated FD mast or the Progression mast. Both will be a substantial step up in terms of performance, and both are very stiff. I personally would not buy a katana for FD - if you want a non-integrated mast I’d get either the T80 or progression - the choice (imo) depends on use case/whether you value more glide or more stiffness (and how heavy you are).
I FD on the T80 and its fantastic. I’m 85kg riding the 125 and135.
I think the alu mast wouldn’t be too different from what you’re on, but I don’t have first-hand experience with it.
Personally very happy with the Katana mast(s) for FD and Wing/PW. Have the p200 - p125 quiver and it handles them all fine in my perspective. The progression mast may be stiffer, but I don’t have any stiffness issues with my 75 or 83 katana masts. The 75 is dedicated to FD and it works well for that. The original Armstrong mast I rode in the past definitely had issues with flex, I don’t experience them on the Katana. I also think the progression is a thicker profile unless you stay high on the mast. So there are trade offs.
And another consideration, FD really needs a dedicated mast. The Aluminum mast was not an option when I was looking to pick up a dedicated mast, from a cost perspective I would have gone that route if I had had a choice. You won’t really notice the weight difference on a FD setup since its already pretty darn heavy and I have heard the Al setup is very stiff.
Of course that would lead you to just sealing up your current Al setup to avoid the water adding additional weight.
If you have the $$$, wait for the Uni carbon integrated mast with HP motor.. It will be worth the wait. I currently have the NoLimitz integrated for my Uni foils, it is fantastic. The Uni one will be even better.
Definitely want to make sure it is stiff and I have found the progression is the perfect mix of stiffness and also a good amount of area in between the mast and the pod. You will need to get a Progression mast - Foil Drive adaptor for the pod due to the progression mast bit of angle. The Uni - FD integrated would mean that you would have to purchase a whole new system from pod- unit which would give you leftover parts. Though the integrated mast is supposed to be epic.
