Wing foil for prone dims

Hey, if you guys had to have one of these boards for mostly prone foiling, which would you go with? I’m a 73KG beginner. I’m aware a wing board is not ideal for prone, but just figure that I’m in a position where this is necessary. If I currently don’t have any plans to wing, which board do you think would get more mileage for prone? I could sell it off, but trying to avoid that.

4’4" x 21.5 x 3.5 44L
or
4’6” x 22.5” x 4” 55L

What position makes a wing board necessary for prone ?

Either theoretically would work. What’s your background catching waves surfing or boogie board or anything?

The narrower one will be easier to paddle.

When the setup you’re getting is such a sick deal that the board is kinda just bonus.

I’m a 41yo surfer. Decades of experience short boarding. Been out a handful of times prone on borrowed gear. My paddle is kinda average. Kinda thinking if I could grow on either for at least a little while. Would I be able to work up to pumping on either of these boards?

And to duckdive. Both should be able to pump if they’re not too heavy. Id take the 44l

Depending on your weight I agree, 44l is the go to. But it is kind of short. So it’ll be a bit of a pain to paddle, especially with current.

Weight-wise (73kg), I agree. I’m definitely also worried about duck-diving it. I ended up going with the 55L though for a couple reasons. I am worried about the shortness of the 4’4". There’s also a break right next to my work that’s convenient to get reps in, but it has a current and can be a little difficult paddling into when it’s not low tide. I’m hoping the extra buoyancy will open that place up for regular sessions. I don’t know anything about wing foil, but I was told that the 55L would be an easier size to sell if it ended up being a no-go. I’ll report back in a few weeks with whether it was a bad idea or not.

That makes sense. It’ll work for learning. You can probably try something a lot smaller for prone once you have it down.

shortness of the 4’4

This is one of the things you have to rewire out of your surfing brain

For real. I thought my small 5’8" fish was tiny. Prone board lengths blow my mind. I have a buddy who rips that prones a 3’6" kite foil board. He generally rolls his eyes at anything bigger. He can paddle into waves I didn’t think were even possible on a board that size. Dude is underwater paddling out.

While this is true. The used market for foils is dried up. Expect to take a huge hit on anything you wish to sell. Either of the 2 boards you listed will work. Mid 40’s is better for prone. Mid 50’s is better for wing. But once you go below 60L for wing it’s all about the same. So for what you are looking to do I think the smaller one is still the right call.

The market for a used 55L board is pretty small. Whereas a guy on a 60L who see’s a smoking deal on a 44L might just go ahead and bite on the sinker as his high wind board that he’ll use a few times a year.

Ended up going with the 4’4" 21.5 44L. I’ll post after it arrives and I’ve got some sessions under my belt. Thanks for all the info.
