2026 M2O Power Rankings

Interesting results. It’s cool that all these races are different. VxWF has the wild AD’s start, IMUA is a sprint, and then the crossings are both different beasts too with M2M being a glorious bay run and M2O the final boss level.

Two quick points - Great showing from Tibby. And Mala’e won the womens division??

Anyone know what foils KT boys are riding (Kane Lenny)? Prototypes or a stock Solus size?

@Jordan_slides I created a dynamic version of your power ranking:

The Completely Unofficial DWFoil Ranking

It’s a rolling 18 month competitiveness index, tracking the performance of the best riders in the world.

This season is as competitive as ever, with a huge amount of drama already, and a consistently tight battle for first amongst our leaders:
@kaii.thompson
@kdmaui
@whoedo

5 (or 6) brands represented in the top 7, it’s a crazy time for downwind racing!

Check it out at dwfoil — Downwind Foiling Community

So maybe I hadn’t pushed the boat out too far with my top 4 order

This is great. And obviously a far more serious take from someone eminently more qualified to throw numbers around! Will keep an eye on this.

Not long now folks! By the end of the weekend we’ll know who’s on top in the foil rankings, and who Infantino has chosen to win the World Cup (spoiler alert: it’s Argentina).

I’m almost certainly not qualified at all haha

I didn’t realise there are 3 races across 4 days with the Koa Kai cup, pretty big logistics challenge for the riders. And that only those 3 races count for points

A bit stuck on how to deal with Teams/Brands/Sponsors for a "constructors trophy"if anyone has any ideas/feelings on how to balance the hassle.

I started by just looking at instagram to find brand affiliations, as that was the simplest “person X rides foil brand Y”

Now they’ve all gone and sleeping around with other foils, and wondering how to deal with it.

I can’t determine exactly who rode what at every race for the entire field, and so getting a strictly correct “Brand” ranking is practically impossible. (I’m getting DMs)

Sponsor/Team was easier = who pays you enough (gear, money, stickers, or otherwise) that you’ve tagged them on your instagram. That is the only thing that is clear (it’s not easy, but it’s tractable and I’m strongly just leaning towards an executive decision)

Otherwise, need someone sitting with a pen at the end of each race taking notes for every race finding all the off-brand riders.

And it breaks the data. Do I create a new “Team = X, Brand = Y”. Then do I aggregate on Brand and then Team too?

How do they do this in cycling? Tennis? F1? @Jordan_slides any racquet sports we can lean on?

Im winging all the races this year. Friday is M2M, Saturday is M2M Kamalo run, Sunday is rest, Monday is M2O.

M2M provide logistics for bags across to Maui.

For M2O most are sponsored and have support boats or a hired escort boat which can carry gear.

Getting gear to the boats is the biggest headache imo.

Team is good. Easier to track.

Could riders link their account to their result and self input team(s)? If people type the same thing they are grouped on the same team. People could even make non foil brand teams like “Tahitians”, “Olukai”, or “LAFC”. I think this would be more fun for the non-sponsored athletes.

Yeah we’re probably only getting stuck on this because of the Slingshot team riding PJ’s this year. But if the top riders, like yourself, don’t care then we shouldn’t either!

This has landed exactly where I hoped - my obscure reference to a Swedish Tennis pro from the 80’s has turned me into the Subject Matter Expert on all things racket sports. I can rest now.

Cycling: team.

Tennis: racket brand, but nobody in the top 100 is using off-the-shelf (heck, even I use lead tape under the grommit strip and I’m a kook)*

F1: team and personal endorsements.

Other Racket Sports: haven’t the foggiest.

*on Lead Taping. Last year I was giving unsolicited advice to Jimmy on strategically placed adhesive weights, rail-balanced just forward of the front foot. So was excited to ride one of Kai’s Gators a couple of months ago with a velcro pad for this very purpose!

Love this. Thanks for your thoughts. And it actually matches what I wanted to aim for which was for some people Brand would be their team but for others they can represent their crew. Maybe we get some “pro-am” teams as well like we see in cycling.

I had already added countries but was worried that I was doing USA for all the Hawaiian crew and even then they’d likely want Maui and Oahu differentiated. This solves that too.

Current leaderboard for countries fyi

But, funnily enough, it’s much more short term work because then each rider needs to “claim” their profile, claim their team etc. But it would be cool, more fun, more flexible too. I’ll let people affiliate however they want, and I guess allow up to 2 for now teams to “represent”.

The result will roughly be something where most of the “rankings” will be by Team. Where Brand will still be there to some extent, but messier as it’s an overlap on team and impossible to pinpoint perfectly, and Country should be easy enough.

I see, we were all gulled into it.

I think cycling is the clearest, where you have “Teams” which can be but not necessarily related to a manufacturer.

eg this legend, where the team is Lidl-Trek, of which Trek happens to be a brand, but usually not, and the bike brands themselves get little mention.

I do think we are premature to marginalise brands too much given there is the sum total audience of this thread, and the only incentive in this mix is for brands to sell foils to us, but it’s a useful precedent to look at

I try not to bang on about it too much. But honestly coach Casey club is the best content on the internet week after week.

Edo broke down his paddle imua and showed even with his gps track why he lost the race. Just great analysis.

James is still home obviously, so keep an eye out for a link to a m2o watch party next week!!

What’s the gist of why he lost? it was a pretty big gap

I wonder if it was starting position. Sounds like Kane was smart and used his PW to sail to the furthest out from coast starting position to better line up the bumps. So good.

Not as big as it appears. Edo told it to a private group so won’t air the whole story here. But part of it is “a beach finish and no one was behind him and Kane so he came off foil in deep water and came in slow to protect equipment.”

The other coconut WhatsApp rumor is Kane was hit by jellyfish at least once right before race.

I am sure I read somewhere Kai came off foil or fell once during the race.

Starting far out helped a bit to catch Edo but we were on the pretty much same line when I came next to him. He took too early of a reef entrance which costs 10 sec or so. Both took it easy on the beach run to protect equipment.
Had a man of war on my leg before the start but I don’t think it affected anything during the race. Fell once trying to get up which took an extra 10 seconds probably.

Everyone is really fast. Last year’s winning time gets you 20th place or something. A fall is pretty brutal position-wise since everyone is so packed together.
Kai fell once. I think it costed him around 45 seconds.

Being a fundraiser event, a gentleman’s finish would be appropriate right? ie no overtaking on the sand. Probably a reasonable expectation for any race that doesn’t finish on water.
