All around mast size

I am looking to move from current brand Alu mast to a new brand and carbon and am hoping to get a do it all mast (wing, SUP foil mainly). Was thinking 80cm would be ideal for this, but also like the look of new KT gear, but they currently only do a 77 and an 85.

I guess the question is does anyone wing with a shorter mast like this and how are the downsides? I image more breaching, but maybe it is something you can get used to and get more precise with pitch control? I’m not out setting speed records or racing or anything like that, just exploring around and riding swell/bumps.

I guess the other option is the 85 which would be better for wing, but I worry on small swell days SUP or prone that it’d be hitting the sand too often.

Winging on surf foil gear is the worst! Partly the mast but mostly just the giant surf wings suck. Just a cheap crappy mid aspect on the right mast beats winging on a 75cm mast and a big surf wing.

Also I hate putting the wear and tear of winging on my “nice” surf foil.

Winging on nice surf foil gear is the best. Super thin 12.5 mm mast, 113 mm chord, and 76 cm mast works well in every condition.

Just making sure you didn’t mean 86cm? 76cm seems on the short end of the spectrum for wing?

I would take a look at Cedrus Evolution Surf mast. It works really well with KT foils.
I have a 76cm that comes up to 81cm with the KT adapter.

For my use case, I like it better than the KT mast. It’s a good investment should you
decide to switch system or mix few systems in your quiver like I do.

Yes, 76 cm. Perhaps it takes some getting used to in the beginning, but I find it’s more engaging to ride with a shorter mast.

A good surf set up is great winging tbh, with the caveat that it has to be a good one. I had the same dilema as you and settled on a full carbon AFS set - Silk 1050 with 80cm UHM mast and plan to expand my quiver over time. The mast replaced my 75cm Axis alu mast. I appreciate the extra 5cm and think 80cm is the perfect do everything size. I’ve ridden an 85cm mast and whilst fine winging, it felt too long for me in waves.

If you’re set on KT then I’d choose based on what you do most, wing = 85, or SUP = 77. :call_me_hand:

I use the same gear for wing and prone, and the mast is fone 14mm 80cm mast. I am pretty happy with it for both wing and prone.

Im 85 for wing and 75 for prone. I’d do 80 for all around if I had to compromise.

80 is a really good compromise. If I had to choose between 77 and 85, I’d go 77 unless you wing somewhere with big short period windswell and tidal current chop. I foiled prone, sup and wing on a 75 for several years before switching to an 85 for wing. It was a dramatic change that I didn’t really like. Now I use an 80 for everything and am happy, but I would be just fine on the 77 too. Maybe NoLimitz will have an adaptor out soon!?
