Second mast size

Hey guys!
So I have a 65cm mast that came with the board I bougth. I am mainly doing prone foiling and 65cm has been usable but I think I could benefit from using a slightly bigger mast, and keeping this one for smaller and shallower waves. From what I’ve seen, 80cm seems to be a pretty standard size all around, but gong doesn’t produce the V2 in 80cm, it’s only in 75 or 85cm. Therefore, I have some doubts about which size to go with. I think I could benefit more from going 85cm and have a bigger difference between the small and the large masts, because I feel 75cm to not be such a big difference.

I am planning on starting to wingfoil too, so I don’t know if that makes also a difference, what do you guys think? Should I go with 75cm or with 85cm as my second mast?

Thank you!

Winging go 85

I second the recommendation for 85…

Agree with 85 for winging, as soon as it gets choppy or you want to heel way over to crank upwind the added length is helpful. Was happy when I moved from 75 to 85. No idea for prone foiling though

I ride a 90cm for all around winging and a 75cm for wake foil or light wind winging. If I were you I’d get the 85.

What you really need is a 75 for daily use prone and the 85 for winging. The 65 should only be used in extremely shallow conditions. That said, many people make a 65 mast work and it sounds like you are one of them. There are pros and cons to a 65 mast. Pros- foil closer to the board makes for a quicker reaction. Can feel looser and more responsive. Cons- Easy to breach. Very small foiling “sweet spot”. Must be carefully managed to the point that mast position (pitch control) takes more priority than anything else you want to do on the wave. All this said, if you can only get one additional size go for the 85 since you plan on winging and just do the best you can with that 65. You can also use the 85 for towing. But if winging is a ways away and your priority is taking your prone game to another level go with the 75.

85 is useless for prone but a 75 would do a fine job of both winging and prone. Esp if you’re winging on something with a span smaller than 80cm. Go with the 75 and never touch the 65 again.

I found 80 to be too long for prone but 75 has been the sweet spot for a while.

I would get a 75 if you have good pitch control. 85 seems too much for prone foil, and that is your main discipline.

I wing with a 65cm classic cedrus and really enjoy it. When tips breach it’s much easier to control and I barely feel it since it’s such a rigid setup (due to construction + short length). Do I have to pump with the waves when going upwind? Yes. But you also can tap into swell energy easier.

I feel like people don’t talk about how chord and thickness should play a huge role when deciding mast length. A 85 classic cedrus feels soooo slow and bulky IMO, but if it’s a fancy mikeslab mast, I don’t mind the longer lengths.
