Looking for advice on a foil setup specific for winging.
Currently I have a 75cm mast, 1150 png, red short fuse, 460 v2 rear which I’ve started to wing with. I have this setup for dock pumping and I have a 910png for wake foiling.
From searching the forums it seems the HPS 1050 is the go to(?). Paired with a black short fuse, however I am not seeing this fuse in stock anywhere. Would the HPS 1050 go with the black advanced+ ultrashort which is available? And then what would be a good stabiliser to use?
Also what would be the optimum mast length to go for? I’m mainly winging on an inland lake, light wind 10-15knts.
The HPS are older wings. They work great for winging and can be picked up second hand cheap. Spitfire are comparable to HPS and a more recent generation. Artv2 are a bit more technical and good for winging, prioritizing glide/speed over turning relative to the HPS/Spitfire.
Might considering going down in area a bit for winging. The HPS 1050 would be a light wind wing for a large person and you already have the two PNG for light wind days.
Maybe something in the 900-1300 square inch area as a medium wind winging option to fill out the quiver.
For a winging tail consider a progressive or a larger skinny - something in the 150 - 200 square inch size range.
A 75 mast will work fine for winging, especially in flat water.
Just wing with your 910. it’s perfectly fine to wing.
If you want to get a new wing, I wouldn’t bother with older wings when you have a 910, but if you do only consider
fireball
art2
spitfire
1300v2 (light wind, but I actually used it in higher winds and liked it as well)
All of which require a black fuse.
The main reason I stopped wanting to ride my 910b was the way it pumped, it still rode great but it pumps more up and down than modern wings and I didn’t like swapping between them.
Oh and for mast, 75 is just fine, especially for a lake. I ride a 70 cm in the ocean personally and I like it.
In regards to the black fuse, should i try to get hold of the original black series or move onto the advanced+?
I have had a go on the advanced+ behind the boat and it felt really weird but it was only a brief go and a totally different setup, is it case of persevere and adapt?
Just get the new advance+ black fuse if you are going black.
Are you going to ride your 910 with the 460 stab? I would actually say your first purchase should be a skinny 45 as that will work with almost any front wing and will liven up that 910 a lot.
Alternatively you might want to get a P325. I actually prefer the P tails for wake but for wing/pump skinny is the way.
Honestly if you’re looking at buying into the black fuse range I’d suggest looking at a better brand for winging. Axis don’t make particularly good intermediate foils for winging compared to other brands. DWing & pumping they excel. I suffered through HPS & spitfires etc & was blown away the first time I rode a F1. The glide is superb. I subsequently opened my eyes to other brands & bought a Code setup. It is so user friendly & forgiving yet the glide & carvability is awesome. There’s very few riders that started on Axis still riding them in our local area. Most have gone with the Sk8. Fortunately for you if you do wish to stay with Axis there are many good deals on the second hand market as everyone is dumping their gear. I wouldn’t bother buying new as fuses etc are at least half price secondhand. I’ll be selling all my stuff for less than the cost of a new front wing just to get rid of it.
This is a bit doomy, there are plenty of people who love their Axis foils, especially the Fireballs and art2. A lot of people sour on Axis because they come out with new foils making them feel like they wasted their money.
When buying used fuses keep in mind they take a lot of stress and can corrode and if they break you lose your front wing. Saving $100 on a fuse that costs you $1000 isn’t always the smart play.
Yes Axis make some fantastic foils. I have an OG V1 PNG 1300 which I love. i probably have the most fun on that foil. Their DW & pump foils are arguably leading the way. For winging though there are some better options & if the Op was looking at spending their money on winging gear there are some better brands for that discipline.
As for your point about feeling soured by Axis, yep I’m totally in that camp. I’ve always just felt like I was another consumer with Axis, being forcefed Hype from their legion of brand ambassadors. I swore I’d never buy another new foil off Axis after they released one a few weeks after I bought their existing one. They however are not the only brand doing that & I can’t understand why the secrecy- we’re invested in their eco system, aren’t we part of their club? I emailed Code to ask about their future developments with foils & if I should wait, they responded back straightaway with an answer. I’ve heard Julian from Fone on the generic foiling podcast talking about their upcoming changes - I was impressed by his transparency. I didn’t mean this to turn into an anti Axis rant, they got me into foiling & I’ll appreciate that.
I think this is a very common story. You can’t go wrong starting with Axis but their intermediate churn is insanely high. For the past 3 AWSI I’ve wondered if they will finally figure out a reasonable general purpose foil, no doubt they will release one that claims it, but man!
