Leashes do pull through surfboards. That’s why they all have rail savers on them (the webbing that attaches to the leash string) Odd that a coil leash would get tangled with the board that far up the rail.
EDIT: Agree with below. Usually the leash is stuck in the board when it pulls through.
Not sure I’d expect that to be coil leash damage. Do you have hard handles on your wing? That’s what I usually expect cracked boards. I’ve seen it happen a few times flapping in extreme winds.
I bet it was your knee or shin too. I’ve done it in the same place and it actually didn’t hurt my knee at all. You fall forward and it makes contact right there.
That’s a good point that I haven’t thought about, I do have hard handles. This sits better in my conscience too, I was starting to think that my leash may have saved me from being decapitated haha.
It could have been a knee or elbow too, I just think I would have felt it when I fell.
Now I just got to get this fixed as quickly as possible because I love this board, and the wind has been great! Will probably be a good time to replace the traction pad with something more grippy too.
That’s a real bummer. I had a similar experience with a brand new board first time trying to foil towing behind a boat. No real bad crashes (didn’t feel any) but found a really big (knee sized) dent on the rail which the repairer reckoned was a heel or knee. Some of the light weight boards are a bit fragile around that area.
One quite cool bit of damage i did was dropping through the air like a wrestler launched from the top rope with my elbow out & it smashing thorough fibreglass deck with a satisfying “THUNK!” I was so proud of that one that I didn’t try to colour over it when repairing it.
Big bummer! I’ve only had this board for a couple of months, and I love it. Either way I will get it patched up so I can get back on the water. Just wished it had happened to my pizza box board that i’ve had since 2020
I’m thinking the handle from my wing is the culprit, but who knows, maybe it was me and I just didn’t feel it.
