I am trying to decide between these two wings for my next purchase. I am a beginner(couple years into the journey) currently riding a 960R using foildrive for assist with shorter downwind runs. Hoping to learn with the foildrive and transition to paddle eventually.
I weigh around 180lbs, reasonably athletic but not getting any younger.
Any thoughts?
I donʻt downwind, but Iʻve SUPed the 1130s in the surf. Iʻm by no means a SUP foiler, but it seems to me the 1130s is going to be the more forgiving option when you switch to the bigger board. Also, thereʻs a guy by me that SUPs the 1300s with a foil drive. He has the controller on the end of his paddle and he rips. Heʻs well over 200lb, so 1130s might be a good fit.
1130 is a gold in the line up. You can take it in 4-6ft swell and ride it no problem. Anything above that is 980.
I weigh the same as you. I don’t FD, but I prone both those foils. I wing them too. For me it’s essential I have both. I love my 980S. If I could only have ONE foil that would be it. The 1130s is my second favorite as it fills in when the 980S is starting to feel a little small. For reference, I also have a 960R but I just never reach for it. I much prefer the S foils.

I have both but rarely ever grab the 1130s unless it’s really small
The 980 is just amazing at everything I’m 240 and use it to
FD,wing,para the 1130 just turns and feels slow.
if u have the 960r, its already equivalent in lift and turn to something like the 1130, its basically just a higher aspect 1130 already, or a more advanced 1130. The 980 is completely different than the 960r, it will turn singificantly better, and will still work with your FD. So get the 1130 if you want the same amount of lift as the 960r, but a more beginner-friendly version that is less efficient. Get the 980 if you want soemthing that turns better and has less lift.
OK now y’all have me leaning toward the 980! Sounds like a great wing.
I don’t know. I kinda disagree with some of this. Yes, the 1130s is less efficient than the 960R and the lift is similar, but the 1130s turns much better. If you push them powered (winging) they’ll both achieve a similar speed. I’ve push both of these to 25.5mph.
I’ve got both 980 & 1130. Both are great, both could be my daily driver. 980 better for bigger stuff - waist to chest high, 1130 glides really well, is a bit slower but still turns nice. 1130 best for PWing for me
