Code S Series by Rider Weight in Small Surf - Prone

I’m trying to establish a baseline for the Code S foils based on rider weight using small 2-3 foot small waves as the base, along with an 85kg rider and a 980S as the starting point. So I just need to fill in the blanks. For example, something like this:

2-3 foot small surf. Prone.

720S = xx kg
850S = xx kg
980S = 85 kg
1130S = xx kg

How would you fill in those blanks?

I need more info on the waves. A swell period at least. Beachbreak vs reef. Hawaii vs UK.

Slower wave, reef, SoCal. Likely a bit more punch than UK, but definitely not Hawaii.

Hmm, I’d argue the 720s is all you need for here. That’s the problem with these types of lists though. Everyone likes to ride differently. To back up my case I will provide Kyle Knox as evidence. He’s heavier than your 85kg range. Only rides the 720s in waves. (or equivalent prototype)

Sure he’s a sponsored rider and surfer. But I am neither of those things and weigh just under your weight range and I would also use the 720s. I haven’t tried a 980s because the 720s already felt too big.

That being said. I would change the weight at 10 lbs per size if I was forced to fill out the list. :stuck_out_tongue:

I guess I filled that list based on my specific needs. I find the 850s too small for these conditions. I’ve watched Kyle Knox (he’s local) and he’s at a different level. I’ve always watched Saxon Chang on these exact same conditions I’m talking about, riding the 720S and he’s much lighter than me. On that same day, I’d been on the 980S if I had one.

For comparison’s sake, I have an 850S, but I mostly wing with it. And I’ll take it out prone, but not on the smallest days. I’ve been paddling out an Axis HPS 880 on the smallest of days, and that I’m sure feels bigger than even the 980S.

Also, maybe I can just stop eating for a bit and lose 10 pounds. lol

the 980S has been perfect for me at 95kg+wetsuit

Watching Kyle you can really see how weight is less of a factor as opposed to steepness of wave. He’s sitting in the pocket or turning back to the pocket at all times. Too many foilers get stuck out on the shoulder or in front of the wave pumping for their lives instead of riding the wave they’re on.

615 in pretty shitty conditions. I love this video.

You guys are showing me superstarts tho. Haha. That’s not going to help. :rofl:

Anyway, I have an 850S and I just find it too small for the described conditions at 85kg. I finally broke down and ordered a 980S.

In Florida, East coast. 80-82kg, I regret getting rid of the 980s for the 850s. Our waves are so weak that I’d rather just have the bigger wing. It actually kinda made me hate prone and just want to downwind haha. Even when I do prone now i just ride the 770R instead of the 850S

Weak east coast 200 lbs…. I feel like the code s 980/850 the same issue as the prog 170/140 the small one is just a hair to little area to be a daily and the big one has too much span to turn great. I owned both progs and was never in the sweet spot and I’ve ridden the code 980 enough to known it’s too much span for me (once LOL!). I always felt like ugh I gotta turn this whale but also I don’t want to give up any low end to get turning. I don’t know the proportions of both series never felt great for me

So that’s generally along what I’ve been thinking. We get really good days out West. But, I’m still new to prone, so I actively look out for waist high days. It’s possible that once I get good at it, because I will, I might seek out more chest high days for the 850S. And I plan to tow the 720S soon. But still… summer’s coming up so we’re going to get a LOT of waist high days. I think I’ve done the right thing.

I’m 95 kg and use the 720s mostly prone, but the 980s is super fun in small surf.. if you use the short fuse and 120 tail it really comes to life turning and still pumps a dream.

Thanks. I have a 120 tail, but shortest fuse currently is the M. I’ll consider a small soon.

I actually prefer the opposite with my 720… use M fuse and 150 tail. Surf it better /harder than I do with 120/short which feels a bit squirrelly. Seems it smoothes everything for me so I can lean into turns, improves pump

I’m just switching to Code and at 90kg I’ve only ridden the 1130S and 980S so far. One thing for sure, fuse length and tail size really change how these work! I only foil small waves, but they have decent energy, so I found at the speed I’m riding, the 1130 was too big. The 980 on a Med fuse feels really good and pumps great. The 1130 is a wave catching machine though in comparision, so I imagine for you jumping from the 850 to 980, you’ll be a lot less tired and able to improve faster with a higher wave count.

Sounds 100%. I have a med and lg fuse for wing. I’ll get a small one eventually. 150AR tail for prone for now, but I do have a 135R and 120R for winging. Another thing that hasn’t been mentioned directly is that a larger foil makes your board feel large too, when paddling in. I hadn’t realized this at first, since I was always using the same foil. When I started trying different foils I realized that when paddling in, the board “feels” a lot less sinky the bigger the foil. A little bit of speed, even from the start of paddling into a wave, seems to create noticeable lift.
