Looking at traveling to Chicama in October. Wondering if anyone has used Code foils for towing here? Smallest foil I own is 615 S. See one video in Spanish with guy using 500 S. They also have higher aspect R line. Any advice for set-up would be appreciated. thanks!
Smallest S you can get. Should be great for there. The 615s is probably fine.
Why S instead of R? Is it because the wave provides enough energy that you don’t need the extra glide from the R and instead should prioritize increased roll and maneuverability of the S?
Towing into waves. Do you want to surf or go fast and straight for a long time?
You shouldn’t need extra glide if you’re being towed. That’s just my train of thought. Never towed.
@BurglersMT recommends 720s and 615s
For small waves a smaller R can be better than a larger size up S. But I would say it’s a different kind of surfing, like longboarding. But only for very small waves. If there is side off or offshore wind that’s when the R really shines as you’ll be able to get that extra glide you need as the offshore wind cancels out your power. But whatever you do make sure you ride either the 135 or 120r tail instead of the Ar tail. As you’ll get like more than half of the benefit from the tail change alone.
Thanks. Was wondering if those tails would be advantageous, but if using small front foil, wouldn’t a larger tail provide better lift/stability to counteract forward pitching at speeds in big swell? Or would you pair smaller HA tail with longer fuselage for stability? Read someone’s comments that reaching speeds of 25 mph.
In big swell your only option is the 500s or 615s. In that case you want a shimmed.0.5 142ar tail as you don’t want glide or speed, you want drag
Honestly depends when you go out. I spent ~2 weeks there in May and mostly towed only mornings when it wasn’t as windy. For high tide mornings I was riding an AFS Enduro 700 (11 AR) but when the swell picked up or tide was lower I was always on my 650 Silk (8 AR). I am 68 kg.
Overall, its nice to have a slightly bigger HA wing for high tide / smaller days to make it through some of the fatter sections of the wave. I
Someone else recommended AFS enduro for tow in big waves. What fuselage and tails did you use in Chicama?
I used the Enduro 700, standard fuse, and HA Silk 38 stab. Worked great!!
Highly recommend buying AFS gear through The Foil Shop. Those guys are the best.
I like smaller tails when going fast. I haven’t come to the conclusion that I need a different tail with different front foils. Only that when going really slow in short period swell, a slightly bigger tail helps with stability and sometimes glide.
