I’ve recently fallen in love with a big HA wing (AFS Enduro 1300) and can’t believe how much fun I’m having on micro days now.
It’s made me wonder - what’s everyone’s current favorite setup for staying on foil in waves as long as possible?

Code 1300s is pretty amazing. I got the 1250r now and will try to see if I can replace it with that. That being said I’m kinda out of breath if I have to pump 30 seconds to link a wave. Don’t understand how Dave does 28min
I’ve been trying to get 30min on the enduro 1300, feels like if the conditions line up it should be viable.
What stab are you pairing with the E1300?
The Silk HA38, works well, I find the setup easily has the glide I just haven’t made it work. I find after about 10min I really feel like I’m locked in and it starts to feel quite fun to push through turns, which is where the trouble is for going longer
Are you proning the 1300 or sup?
@Matt what size waves are you riding the 1300 in?
Curious on the upper end for a wing that size…
I’ve been toying with a Lift 180HAX on small days (1-2’) and struggling with more than a few links.
Thinking maybe I could just use it in bigger waves and not be overfoiled/get more energy from the wave and less needed from pumping
Agreed, I love my 1300S, but I’ve had a recent observation as I continue to improve proning my 770R. If I’m riding both these wings in waist high waves where I could be happy on either, I feel like I use half the energy on the 770R compared to the 1300S. Pumping the 1300S is more taxing and I cook my legs trying to convince it to turn hard. In contrast, the 770R takes way less energy to pump and gets to my target wave in much less time. For sure the 770R demands more finesse, but it’s quickly becoming my “stay on foil” wing over something bigger, as long as it’s not 0-1’.
Yeah for me the amount of effort to pump the 770 is similar to the 980, a bit more. And the 1075 is like the faster but more efficient to pump version of the 1300. I’m 100kg.
Mostly prone, occasional sup but typically only very light downwinders.
Sup in the surf on a huge foil doesn’t really appeal as I can just chip in on the prone instead. Only when it’s bigger and can’t chip do I start thinking of sup, and probably smaller foil
Mostly small. To do longer stints on foil the biggest thing is a relatively short period swell that doesn’t leave you pumping out the back with no waves. If there are lulls then you go into energy reserves and blow up heart rate which is pretty impossible to recover I find
I’ve ridden the 1300 pretty big surf doing what you say, you can just glide from wave to wave and then pump around waiting for the next set, but the turbulence and speed isn’t ideal
What fuse for your prone 1300 setup? I tried proning my 1100 Enduro yesterday but hated it on my smaller board - love it on SUP tho. I was on standard fuse though
I definitely don’t love it if that is what you are wondering, but on the short fuse on the shortest position and after about 2-3min I find that I lock into a nice longboard style flow where I can do what feel like really nice mix of snappy and flowing turns. When I first jump onto a big foil it does feel completely alien, and needs a different approach
Ah ok - good tips. Sounds like I should give my bigger enduros another shot on the smaller fuse.
maybe unpopular but I’ve been having a blast sup surfing on the code 1250r, I can stay up forever on it and when you figure out what it likes and how to surf it you can actually make some pretty tight fun turns on it. I have a blast surfing unnecessarily big wings in summer bs waves
If you’re staying up too long you’re not turning hard enough ![]()
for real, If you’re not falling you’re not having fun lmao
I got the North dw1100 a few days ago and it’s blowing my mind. Im used to riding the surf1080 foil in all foil styles except kite, dw, and towing. The 1100 has an aspect ratio of 12 but shares a crazy low stall speed with the 1080 (AR 8). The bottom of the foil is concave to make this happen, acting as a plane wing w flaps down to decrease minimum flight speed.
I tried learning to downwind with the 1450ha and the stall speed is too high for weaker conditions. I also cannot roll turn that beast and it doesnt respond to pumping. Prob better for a 200lb lad. Im 185lb. I think the 1100 is going to unlock dw for me.
..the first time I took the 1100 out for a test, I did a 9 min shorerun (my longest run) with ease in very weak conditions (1ft bumps, <10mph breeze)…the first chip I caught. The glide and pump is near effortless if feet in a good spot and technique is solid. My watch recorded average heart rate at 134 during that ride. Manage your heart/breath and u can pump forever.
The spanny 1100 doesnt roll like the 1080, but I can tell it’s one of those foils made for breaking distance and time records. When a short period, clean swell lines up, I don’t see why cruising around and connecting for 20 to 30 minutes isn’t possible! Demo a North dw foil ASAP
