Bought some great secondhand foils, but the previous owner must have stored them in a fish tank. Would love not to get this smell into my car, what would be a good way to remove the odor? Google suggests vinegar, lemon juice or baking soda, anyone with experience?

Or maybe they had the foils on a boat that they also used for fishing. I would start by soaking them in baking soda and water. Then I’d try using some enzyme cleaner used for pet odors, like Biokleen, Nature’s Miracle, and Rocco & Roxie. No solvents in them that might erode or damage the covers.

Maybe algee smell from fresh water usage. Had this in my carpet pad on a “special price” new car that must have been left outside with a window down or flooded or something… ran a cleaning solution with vinegar and baking soda and let dry completely. Amazing how many people couldn’t smell anything vs those who could be in the car due to the smell.
Thanks for all the tips to try. No I think it’s just a smelly sea place. I recognize the smell from my sailing years, lifting the boat out of the water on a sunny day the hull growth can smell like that. Bit similar to the fish smell we get here on days with a particular wind wave temperature combinations which makes dead micro organisms wash ashore.
I’ve put a few brands covers though washing machine - code lift axis Cabrinha - all have been fine and come out looking and smelling almost new
Good to know, I was wondering if a machine wash would ruin them.
Also, reporting back: vinegar did most of the trick, there is a faint whiff of the fish smell left, but not enough to bother with another treatment.
