Foil Drive regrets and battery slipping

I am starting to regret buying the Slim instead of the MAX. The fact that I cant even feel the weight is great, and if the conditions are right I can extend the slim up to an hour just taking off on the wave. But its quite evident the loss of power from the 50% and on.

I have been fighting with an Armstrong MA800 for a while, and I can take off the first two or three times but the FD doesn´t have enough power to lift me for more than 30 seconds ..I am 75kg and riding a 45L ML.. and feel overpower with the HA780 and totally underpowered with the MA800.

My guess is that the MAX battery can deliver higher power more time hence you can use smaller foils..is that right?

Sorry I forgot the other thing i wanted to comment on.

Its the second time that when crashing pretty hard the battery slips out of the connector and i loose the power. I have then to go in, unlatch and put it back in.

Has this happened to anyone else?

You haven’t stated which battery you are using. The endurance battery is 28v and known for loosing punch as the charge level drops. The performance battery is 40v and doesn’t have this issue to the same extent.

Make sure your using the correct nose cone, if you are, put a block of foam or similar to prevent the battery moving forward. This could be a piece of deck pad stuck to the battery.

Most use the Max system for runtime, the Slim system is definitely limited in that regard. The Max Sport battery lightens up the Max system a lot, not quite as light as the Slim but quite good runtime.

Sorry , yes , is the 28v. I have the chance to buy a 40v slim performance , do you think is worth?

The performance battery gives very little runtime, only usable for getting up on foil while prone, parawing or winging. No good for motoring back out on foil, only slowly while prone.

I can get about 15mins of upwind, pump downwind on a Axis Fireball 1350 using the performance battery in almost zero wind.

I use a slim with either performance or travel batteries. Pretty new to riding it still.

I run my throttle at 80% limit.

When in the surf I am able to get a good hour out of a battery, but I am only using it to pop up early in the swell, ride the wave, then pumping back out to connect as much as possible. The 800MA won’t pump well enough for this. The 780HA should…

You said “It doesn’t have enough power to lift me for more than 30 seconds” Are you trying to flat water start and efoil to the wave?

Using the Max battery for prone style surfing chipping in and paddleing back out on cruise control I easily get 30+ waves and average about 1hour and 45min to 2+ hours if I paddle more. Just tuck the controller in your chest zip area and paddle like old school surfing. There are a few guys up here who do the same and don’t motor around on foil. They all have similar results for session times. You can still pump multiple waves with FD Max…each chip-in using prone size gear costs about 2%.

I’m physically old, so the “old school” paddling back out uses too much of my human battery  I would rather just come in to battery swap more often. However pumping back out is actually a fun challenge and a worthwhile exchange of human battery to lithium savings

not really, i use a bump for that but sometimes i need to ride back and catch a wave , and if for some reason this process takes longer than usual the FD starts to loose thrust power..
