ICYMI: Mcflowi flowin’ on the Piranha!
A 685 will go very well with the 900. For pure winging, I would say the 685 is the one you will use the most. And then you take out the 900 if it is super light.
The 900 is also the tool if you go dw winging, and the bumps are small.
Can the 900 Orca be used on the racing wing masts? 107/108?
It is probably not what they had in mind when designing the 107 and the 900.
But I have a buddy that loves the Orca 800 on a 106 mast and 90l R-board. It is not fast, like the Wahoo’s that is the natural wing to pair with the race mast. But extremely easy to use. If you are struggling with tacks on the Wahoo’s, a Orca 800 will make it much easier.
Personally I ve also had the R-board with the 106, and all of the non mono block Wahoo’s, as well as all of the Orcas. The Orcas is much more user-friendly, while the Wahoo’s feels like you are on steel bearings on rails. Super fast.
I don’t think I ever tried the Orca on the 106.
Thx. And if I do go to 685, what is the appropriate stab for someone wanting the stability and ease of use of the 900/150S?
Thanks, but what i mean is has it actually been tested? I know that some brands do not allow for usage of front wings with a span exceeding 100cm to be used on their longest masts, because of risk of breakage at the mast-fuse joint. The span on the Orca 900 is 106cm.
I am looking for a larger, recreational option to use on days where I don’t want to run the 575. The 2-piece Wahoos are slightly dated, surely you don’t disagree? The 800 wahoo is also a bit too small to be used in the 4-8 knot range, even with a 7.0. A 900 or 1000 option, as I am familiar with other brands, is more suitable at my weight. Thanks!
The 150S will for very well with the 685. But it is always nice to have a few different stabs to test, and see for yourself how it affects the setup.
If it voids the warranty of the mast, you will have to check with F4.
I would go for the 800 for what you describe, or maybe even a 685. What’s your weight?
A friend of mine bought the 685 and 800 for winging on the 95RC mast. And he doesn’t use the 800, as he feels the 685 has enough low end. But he is around 75kg, and on a 70l short midlength.
Your response tells me everything we need to know
thank you! 78kg without gear. Would love to hear from someone actually on the F4 team on this, want to avoid any messy situations on warranties and shipping where possible.
I’m not really sure how to answer the above questions about winging. But I came to post about comparing the 685 and 800 orcas. At my weight (205-210lbs) I usually need to take a bit bigger foil than everyone else. So I gravitated to the 800 and even felt like this was going to be too small. I rode it a lot on waves and downwind and have really enjoyed it.
enter the 685 - I just got it and have two days now back to back on both 685/800 sup surfing gutless little waves.
I have to say, the 685 is hands down the better foil in every way. The 800 rides so much bigger in its characteristics - a little slower, a bit floppy and drawn out turns - in comparison. Keep in mind the 800 is already a small nimble foil so not to take anything away from it - it’s a fantastic foil. But head to head with the 685, I don’t think I will use the 800 anymore. There is an ever so slight difference in low end, but everything else the 685 has the edge. Counterintuitively it is easier to pump, I think due to lower drag it takes less energy and I could get longer pump outs easier. But also importantly, it is faster and carries speed through turns and dead sections better.
The orca 685 is an amazing foil, a magic size for me.
I had an interesting experience riding behind someone on an 800 Orca in Bay bumps. The foil was putting off a very noticeable wake. I have tended to correlate that with less efficient foils but that doesn’t seem to fit here. It was happening when the rider was cruising on swell, not just sharp turns or pumping.
Any thoughts on this experience?
Scratches in the foil. I repair mine when I collect a few. Makes a huge difference. I have lots of green 3m spot putty visible on mine.
It might look like crap with all these green spots, but the difference in ride is insane. You will never ride with scratches again, after using 3m spot putty for repairs. The spot putty being softer than epoxy, prevents you from altering the foil section during sanding. You can wet sand it smooth with 1000 grit in seconds. Tip, always buy the green spot putty, not the red. The red is too soft and runny.
Softer material to avoid changing the profile when repairing seems like a good idea, I know some use paint pens that i presume have similar characteristics.
Though I’m a bit skeptical on the significant difference. It was my understanding the pressure side (bottom of the front foil) didn’t matter as much regarding scratches. His foil ago is quite new and I think in good condition.
This being said his setup does whistle but again wouldn’t suppose that would create such significant turbulence I could feel so drastically. I think he will be attempting to tune that out.
Just had an ocean session with the 600 Piranha and the 585 Hammerhead with the 75L Emona and 85cm SR Tuttle Mast. First time on these wings and board and it was so fun. Conditions were sideshore around 15-18mph and nice Seabeeze swells.
Piranha let me surf the swells more aggressively than the hammerhead, but the hammerhead was so effortless. Love them both! Crazy that I’m parawinging 600 and 585 size foils in the ocean on an average sea breeze day. The 75L to my 68kgs board definitely helped, but I did have to upsize to my 5.3 S3 toward the end.
The board feels very well balanced and allowed easy taxiing if waiting on a gust. Great rocker allowed for aggressive pumping despite being positive volume. I was worried it would be too corky, but no problems there. I’m going to give the SUP paddle and hand paddles ago at some point.
The Tuttle is really interesting! At first, It makes the mast feel even longer than 85 cms, as you are basically standing on it, so you don’t really feel the 4” thick board. So far I really like the direct feeling. I was at home ripping turns on the Piranha almost right away. The 85cm really lets you lay it on rail and project up to the next turn, which is amazing.
Only qualm was the Piranha or the 138 surf tail was whistling quite a bit, so I’ll need to tune that. Hammerhead head and 125 DW tall were silent
Great kit!!
Edit: I will add that the Hammerhead made it extremely easy to catch up and overtake a bump. Easiest I’ve experienced yet. I also hit around 18mph going upwind with a 5.3M in around 18 mph wind.
Anyone have feedback on the 138 tail?
SR Tuttle mast, 510 hammer head with 100 tail taking 1,3,4 at voyager - the first triple crown even in oahu!
Congrats to all the riders!!
Hi,
Just want to say huge thx and express our appreciation for everyone participating and supporting us on this forum. It’s been just one year since we started this thread!!
Br,
Chris
It’s certainly been an interesting year Chris, I have collected 4 Orcas in that time but can you guys stop messing around with race wings and masts
and get those Piranhas into production. ![]()
