KT Atlas. What size for downwind in Mediterranean?

Hi, I’m 84kg. 1,81 use a 7’6’’ x 17 -115L Armstrong Ocean Board. I live in Palma de Mallorca, in the mediterranean, normally thermal breeze, between 10-15 knots.
Small choppy.

I want a foil for these bad conditions, easy to use and a bit faster or playful respect to the big other sizes.
What size do you recommend me?

Hace been doing last downwinds in Armstrong APF 1350 but is too slow, and tried DWP 930 but stall speed is 10/11 mph, faster than the choppy, so it gets so hard and sketchy in bad conditions like these.

People here also uses Axis Spitfire 1201
Or Code 1500/1250/1300 or 1075 if conditions are good normally.

KT 960 is what you probably want, but it is quite slow. You might find it to be too slow. It does turn and is playful. 790 would be the alternative.

I find the conditions you describe to be in the middle. I switched from a lift 150 to a KT 960/ 680. My hope was the 960 would be for the 10-12kn condition and the 680 for everything else. The 960 works for the 10-12kn, but is too slow for the 15ish conditions. Meanwhile the 680 struggles in the 15ish conditions. That’s where the 870 comes in.

I’m trying to work on my cardio and pump so I can skip the 870, but so far it’s not been easy.

My buddy Cyril is in the French Med area and uses an Armstrong HA 880 and 1080 quiver and is totally covered he says.

What tail are you using? Shims? With smaller atlas tails shimmed to recs, should be plenty fast enough for those conditions.

Ok. So 960 for 10/15 knots and 790 for 15/18knots? Should work?

Yes, but we don’t actually know your riding conditions. If your in 18kn + swell you probably won’t be able to keep up with the swell on the 790. But for wind chop/ slower waves it’ll be fine.

I have no trouble keeping up with 15g20 wind swell on my Atlas 1340

I was going about 18 km/h on that run with a peak of 23 km/h.

I’m not sure if you meant Axis Spitfire 1180 or ARTPRO 1201 but I’ve owned both.
Atlas 1340 vs. 1180:

  • better low end
  • similar top end
  • slightly worse turns
  • massively easier to pump

Atlas 1340 vs. 1201:

  • massively better low end
  • worse top end
  • much better turns
  • similar glide
  • similar pump
  • more pitch stable

I ride my Atlas 1340 with 70 cm mast, 170 tail and use -0.5° shim less than specified.

Are you parawing dragging or are you foiling with it stowed? Makes a big difference in what your perception may be. My comments are for paddle dw foiling. Different locations have different wave speeds. Ie lakes/ bays/ rivers will have slower waves. Ocean will have faster moving waves.

wadded up in 1 hand, going 9-12 knots directly with the wind which is blowing 15-20 so it only sees 6-9 knots of relative wind and on top of that it’s in the front hand so it’s partially in the wind shadow of my body.

Ocean waters with 35 km fetch.

For 10–12 knots, I would recommend the 960 and the 1130, depending on your skill level. I weigh 79–80 kg, and the 960 is my big foil. My local run in Greece is a bay run, and in these waves, both foils perform incredibly well.

To give a rough idea of pace: the 1130 with the 170 tail can do 2:40/km, while the 960 with the 145 tail can hit 2:30/km or even faster. But I think the most important thing about these foils isn’t the speed—it’s how fun they are on the bumps. Super surfy and predictable, they make every session a heap of fun.

Awesome, and what do you think about the low end? Is easy to paddle up the 960? Do you know the stall speed?

Taking off with the 960 is super easy. The low-end performance of these foils is amazing. I don’t know the exact speed, but I’m always blown away by how slow I can go on gutless waves and still stay up on foil.

I don’t paddle but I can tell you there is a big difference in pumping up the 960 vs 1340 as well as dock starting them. The 1340 has quite a bit lower low end than the 960.

I can dead start, jump start, rock start, 1 step start, reverse push start the 1340 with ease.

So far I’ve only managed to dock start the 960 via 2-3 step run start, but I don’t spend much time on it as I just choose the 1340 instead.

I would compare the Atlas 960 to the Axis 1201 (1300 sqcm) in terms of starts and pump ups, probably a little bit easier than the 1201.

You can see my initial dock starts on the 1340 vs. 960 here

I can easily paddle the 960 up in flat conditions with any passing small boat wake, and then ride the wake of a small boat idling by. Any larger KT for me would only be for dockstarts or intentionally flat water pumping. Low end = good.
