I am looking to get into Foiling and have been trying to learn as much as I can for purchasing my first setup but… man is it a little confusing coming from the outside.
I am mainly looking to get into prone surfing and eventually picking up winging.
From everything I am reading a 35-40L board should do me right for south jersey waves and being 175 lbs.
I am so lost on where to begin for the whole foil aspect of the equation. The only thing I have gathered is something like an Armstrong V1 setup would be good for starting out.
So I guess this post has two main questions:
What is your guys Ideal beginner set up / what you would recommend?
Good brands to start that can be found used would be unifoil progression or code foils s series in the larger sizes.
I don’t prone, but it’s known to be a hard place to start (unless your conditions are amazing and you’re a high level surfer). Winging (known to be the easiest place to start) still has a learning curve to it. The learning process is a good journey though. Have fun!
Don’t waste you time on any of that Armstrong stuff - esp older stuff. The older gear has so much flex It’s almost unrideable prone. Also, there’s not really an Armstrong wing that’s a good beginner prone shape - the HS and MA lines are too slow to really pump and double and you want that double on your roadmap on that first setup. The HAs pump but the sizes you’d need as a beginner don’t turn enough to surf. The smaller HAs are probably reasonable surf foils for advanced riders but I don’t think your there yet.
Where are you located - your local geography has more to do with this answer than you do!
Will definitely be keeping my eye out, thank you for the advice! Looking to be all in for 1500 or less, but let me know if I should be changing my expectations.
Mellow mushy east coast is perfect for the foil! Awesome choice! Id say try to find something with a span between 950 and 1000. As others hav said a prog 200 or 170 would be perfect to get going and get you some doubles that will increase your time on foil. The progression is a great pumping foil for how well it surfs and that important because getting to doubles and triples is how you really ramp up the progression. Definitely a 75 mast and don’t be afraid of the long fuse.
Don’t be afraid of a slightly bigger board - something in the 40L range to increase the time on foil. Years ago people convinced themselves their new smaller bord pumped better - but that was just flex in their old setup and a stiff freshie making it feel that way.
Hello! Like the others say, Unifoil progression is a great option. I have a progression 170, 75 katana kit available. I am not far from you in North Carolina and can ship to you. Sent you a message!
