Mast ventilation - all the rage. But what the hell is it?

I’m grateful someone got a clip of that. Clears up any misconceptions that ventilation is only a high speed wing/kite issue. Agree with above. Masts are so sensitive to production abnormalities it can happen to anyone. Just gotta know what to look for.

This :backhand_index_pointing_up: :+1: The feeling I get isn’t the entire foil suddenly falling out, but rather I loose stability in the angle I’m riding and can’t get the mast vertical again and my weight back up on top of the foil. The result is falling backwards as the board tips over to weather. Just like in this clip: https://youtu.be/BlCuVZK2aqE?si=va_T-QX5QpgCB2VE I experience this when riding upwind, leaned over and in choppy water.

Amazing, thanks same mast even. Did you get it to stop doing that? How did you sand it exactly?

The best approach is to sand it along direction of travel, search how to sand a foil, don’t start too low, I’d go 400 then up to 1200 grit. Use proper wet sandpaper and take care, carbon dust is very unhealthy

I’m completely certain that the ventilation issue is due to the wrong mast profile. I have tested numerous masts and made few by myself, the last one of my mast has absolutely no ventilation problems. Some sanding can help maintain the flow and prevent it from separating water from the mast surface, but overall, it is primarily a profile issue.
