How about a parawing that is 6m for starting then when up on foil pull a couple of strings & the end panels pull in making it smaller.
I think that’s what PPC is trying to do.
Did you try this? Seems like a cost-effective way to get up in light wind rather than buying larger foils or new ones with flaps.
No, someone should. I think drilling out an axis fuse and using one of their older foils would work. I think the guy who did the one in the picture probably has the wrong idea, ideally you want a higher aspect foil on the top, maybe even a bigger one. Someone do it
why do you think that? I would think you want a lot of low end lift from it. I would have guessed a fairly low aspect wing with a good bit extra angle of attack designed into it. You wouldn’t need it to be a “wing” shaped thing - I think rectangular might actually be ideal since we aren’t surfing it. I would have thought lowest span is better so the tips don’t get involved in touchdowns in turns.
Honestly, this idea seems like one of the very best ones in the entire thread, and we really might see it in winging or downwind racing. those guys aren’t ever touching down, and if it allows to get going on a smaller foil it might buy its way in.

I’ve thought about it lots. It would just add more drag was always where my mind ended up.
in my mind it goes like this, but real calculations and trials would be needed to see how to balance the size/aspect/angle
- at zero speed, lift comes entirely from buoyancy of the board
- at low speeds, lift comes almost entirely from the angle of the bottom of the board in the water
- at medium speeds, lift from the mast foil starts to engage and get more or all of the board out of the water
- at higher speeds, lift from the main foil engages to get everything out of the water.
The mast foil will have a lift/drag ratio yes. But if it helps get the board out of the equation, it has to have less drag than the board. The math would tell us of that upper foil needs to be a lot bigger to actually be useful.
I think you want a wing like a STOL Kitfox in the “boost out of water” phase - low stall speed (edit: you already said this). I think this is what Evolve has attempted. Seems like you’re saying the wingspan needs to be longer. I haven’t tried it - there’s always something else to buy. However, having bought a ZipPod for my FD I can say some of these aftermarket products are really good.
I was suggesting that the wingspan of the mast foil needs to be pretty narrow. Almost certainly lower span than the board is wide. I don’t think we would want it coming into play in a high speed turn. Bad sketch of the concept - it should be invisible and never touch the water when up and foiling
The very rough idea is that span corresponding to lift and we want maximum lift for given area, and minimal drag, and we can tolerate a number of compromises as it only has one function.
Also just looking at that stubby fin I can see it’s not doing much and feel like next logical experiment the other extreme

I think it’s behaving something like a biplane - the main foil is always working but needs more speed to produce a lot of lift. The Evolve mast foil produces more lift at low speeds (how much is an open question) but a lot of drag at higher speeds. Fortunately when the main wing takes over the upper wing is out of the water.

my first version was winch like in nature but this continuous rope thing has me wondering. illegal ebikes are going cheap in the UK
why do you think they have so many pulleys and leads into that wheel? getting max friction makes sense.
they just seem to leave it in gear as I suppose it’s just a single speed they need, where we’d need your man in overalls
