Hi guys, would appreciate your opinion on North horizon board and North foils in general as I have rider proposal from my local shop. Personally I haven’t really seen them around in the downwind scene. Your input is appreciated!
I have ridden most of the stock dw board on the market and was impressed with the north horizon, don’t love the candy shell paint but other than construction was great, and a good shape to develop good speed.
Their board is ok, it’s more of a speed generated take off vs bounce take off! It’s narrow, yet very stable with the square rails. We are working on V2 now.
The foils are epic!
I ride the 830 and 750 consistently here in Puerto Rico. Amazing low end and good glide. 13.3AR on the 750. Paired with a 600 fuse and 142 or 122 tails
They surf pretty well for being that AR.
Make sure you are on the HM mast. The CF does not handle the wing span well and you look a lot of stability. I use the 80 for everything.
Thanks for the input. 830 sounds really small for me to paddle onto the foil. How much do you weigh? I am 80kilos. not too experienced and dealing with low energy conditions here. So I currently use the 1500 Seven seas from F1. Tried Eagle X 1000 couple of times but could not paddle it up in this slow chops.
Where are you located? Did you sell the 1000X?
Is the construction(durability wise) bad or do you just not like the aesthetics?
The DW foils have a ton of low end.
I’m pretty experienced. The 900 for PR and my skills and fast swell felt too big. But for sure it’s a skill you need to learn. They are good foils. You should be stoked.
They are durable. We had some warranties on the carbon fuse. They have re-built it since and new ones are rolling out now. That was the only thing I had issues with. You will not see them announce a new fuse it was just a roll out change in construction. I am kite foiling and pounding the hell out of it 50+ ft jumps and have had no issues with the gear.
Aesthetics and the green lines may roll out and be taken off soonish also. Rumor has it
And the parawing, is sick!
I think the correct way to finish a foil board is with an epoxy primer that is sanded, but many companies don’t want to because it shows their layup (and therefore it cannot suck). The multiple layer of thick paint on the north board is not only prone to chips and scratches, it also is super heavy.
Gotcha thanks! Aesthetics don’t bother me but heavy does
Hi, I’m in Cyprus, no, I didn’t sell the EagleX, my goal is to fly it🫡
Im 180-185lbs and been riding lots of North gear for about 2 yrs. Dont have the Horizon but want it. Started SUP foiling last week on a buddy’s homemade dw shape (~125L) with North setup underneath. CF72 mast, c600 fuse, sf1080 front and new 142 stab. LOVE it. Paddling in and up on foil before small FL waves ever break. Pumping way back out and connected 4 waves yesterday.
Also have Swell & Seek boards for prone & wing. Shell paint does chip when lightly impacted, but that’s it. No water entry. The durability, design and construction of their connection points and foils is awesome. I cannot compare to feeling/owning a more expensive brand.
Nice, what differences did you notice with the new stab? waiting for it to come back in stock
The anhedral 142 stab compared to 215:
Top end- higher/faster
Bottom end- slightly higher stall speed/later lift
Agility- slightly higher
Stability- similar
Pumping- possibly better… Pumps great
Glide- increased (less drag)
I dont pop up onto foil quite as suddenly, but one or two more pumps and Im up. Stall speed is still surprisingly low for such a tiny chord stab. Love it!
I have the 7’10 horizon at 83kg w wetsuit, normally 80. This is my first downwind / wing / sup board. It definitely feels catered to downwind at 18.5 wide. I got it for an all arounder with downwind the main focus then winging. If the waves are waist+ I’m proning since always my favorite. However, after playing in knee to thigh high waves i found it to be a lot of fun. At that point i kind of wished i had something around 20-22 wide and shorter. it’s tough to balance w swell, chop, reverb, etc. especially since i’m on the upper end of weight for board.
winging was super fun. its like a knife in water and wants to move, so its a big winner in that department.
i tried flat water paddle ups one day w a 1400 and felt it staring to lift, but being a newbie couldn’t quite get it. i agree w another post that it gets to speed quick, but its not a pump, pump, up with the board. it’s more of a speedster than a bouncer to get up.
i tried a bay paddle up with only 12ish knots and no whitecaps. it was sub optimal, but figured good practice. it was a struggle to balance in the chop.
I’ve had a total of probably 8 hrs on it and like it a lot. However, for going just downwind with a paddle i will need a lot more practice, and mostly due to the 18.5 wide.
i also found i have to paddle with feet parallel and on very edge of outside board. then when i see or feel something i switch to surf stance to dig.
i feel there are a lot of easier boards out there, but hoping to grow into this and have more fun later, than something slower later.
been a fun experience so far. winner all around, other than tougher balance.
my 2 cents. good luck
I just switched to NORTH from Gofoil and I think the SF series is very good indeed. I’m using the 1080 for SUP and the 830 and 680 for wing. Only use the 600 fuse. The SF series has plenty of low end, pump well and seems to be very well behaved when pushed hard. Easy to get the tips out when cranking. Build quality on the foils seems good. And, honestly, the price compared to F-ONE etc is GREAT.
