Anyone prone foiling in the outer banks NC this week? Hit me up if you would like some company.
I was up there two weekends ago. Lots of good spots that break pretty far out. Would love to try prone just north of Oregon inlet. Breaks super far out but was too sketched out to paddle out there by myself. Im sure its super fishy.
If you ever make it to Wrightsville Beach, shoot me a message! Thats my home break just a few hours south of OBX.
I wish! Had the best luck with the Sand bars at Avon pier and Frisco bath house a couple weeks ago.
Next time
ok thanks all and yes @Jsonnett that whole area for sure looks fishy!
Reviving this thread. It showed up when I search “prone foiling in outer banks”. I’m thinking of spending more time in that area, but I’m a little apprehensive about leaving San Diego surf and prone conditions.
I’ve spent a lot of time in both places, OBX and Encinitas. Short answer is, quality and consistency in Encinitas is far superior, but the crowds in OBX are minimal.
That’s cool. I used to live in Encinitas. I’m inland now, so I have to drive to the beach. There are a couple of prone gems out here that are waves that surfers don’t care for… so generally, there’s space for foilers. Here’s the catch though, beyond surfing, there’s the cost of surfing. It costs far more to surf in San Diego regardless of the condition differences. I feel that I’ll be giving up certain conditions I really like, and trading them for a place that will be less stressful. Not to mention, San Diego sucks for downwinding, or wingfoil/kite in the ocean. The only real upside here is the surf conditions.
I don’t think this is OBX, but it’s should get you stoked about foiling on the East Coast.
@TooMuchEpoxy where you at exactly?
Pretty sure Charleston SC
Yeah, Charleston, SC! Winter has been hard on the southeast though. We’re running a 2 month flat spell now! Fall and spring at the best times here.
That’s the thing about SoCal… there are hardly any “flat” days. If you paddle out with a foil on a flat day and you’re patient enough, you’ll catch a few waves. Generally, flat here is 2-3 feet, or 1-2 foot on the worst days. 1-2 foot doesn’t happen that often and are usually described as ankle to thigh high. But if you’re patient enough, something bigger usually rolls through every once in a while.
I’ll listen to this in a bit. Thanks.
You hit the bullseye there, the Outer Banks is one of the least stressful places I’ve ever been. However, I’m not a local so I’m sure it has it’s moments. The winters there are harsh but if you have the right attitude and gear, you can score on many fronts and you’ll be wishing there was at least one other person out with you.
Have you looked at central Florida? Lots of fun days, almost too many between all disciplines. Miles of open beaches and way warmer
My wife was just in FL and was trying to sell it to me. As a surfer, I’ve always seen Florida as a perfect place to get bitten by a shark. lol. I feel OBX is even more sharky than SoCal, but less than FL. Our whities out here are kinda chill. lol. That all said, I’l loving the prone videos coming out of Cocoa Beach. There’s obviously a great crew out there.
I was listening to that podcast last night while working out. Pretty interesting, and very different downwind style than in most other places. I can see this being possible in Puerto Rico, since paddling a prone board back from a mile out is pretty feasible there.
I don’t know the area they’re talking about in the podcast, but from looking at Google Maps I feel they must be talking about Morris Island since they keep referring to an island.
There’s also Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms, so who knows?
Folly beach is the spot we’re talking about there! (It’s all islands here a there’s no mainland that touches the beach really). Thanks for giving us a listen!
Also, this is a NE wind downwind day for reference. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fqzTfZG_MaA
We got probably 40 days like this in September and October which was rad but it’s been flat since mid November so take it all with a grain of salt.
Ah very, cool. I see that’s the pier they’re likely talking about. And I see it’s just South of where I was looking. That Morris Island is just after, but I can see that Folly Island has a road from end to end.
