Beginner - Looking for help/demo in San Diego

I’ve been eFoiling for the past year in Mission Bay on a Lift eFoil that a freind of mine owns. I love it. I’m able to eFoil, no problem. My goal is to learn how to prone foil in small surf in San Diego.

I’m wondering if anyone here has any recommendations on learning to prone foil(I’ve watched almost every YouTube video out there) and/or if any local SD prone foilers would be willing to meet up and let me try their setup in super small surf?

I’m in the OB/Point Loma area, 52 years old and have been surfing for 40 years. I just want to see if I can “do it” before I drop $$ on a board and foil setup.

Thanks in advance!

Do you know how to tow? If you can drive or have a ski it might be easier to get a demo. :grinning:

No, I don’t own a ski or have towing experience.

I’m just a long-time “Surfer” who wants to learn how to prone surf in small beachbreak around San Diego after learning the basics on a Lift eFoil.

If you want a lesson, Chuck Glynn will get you going from the ground up:

Honestly this is the best way to go and avoid the “near death” experience most of us have had when we started.

or message Duke on instagram @sandiegofoilclub he’s in Point Loma and could get you on some demo gear.

Thanks, would you be willing to let a total prone beginner willing to demo/learn on it for a session? I surf up there a couple times a week and have no problem meeting you anywhere in that area.

Let me know, Thanks!

+1 for Chuck. He is the best you will find.

Hi @tenover - Please send me a DM. You can paddle out with me. I also have a few tips about learning in San Diego. Some things that worked for me. I’m a beginner at prone, but I’m finally up and going and there are some things that helped me where I used friends’ advice and also some things I adjusted to suit my own style. I too have surfed all my life, I also wing foil, so I spend a lot of time on foil (which definitely helps). Also working on DW.

It’s boring flatwater. But all the demo gear you could want to try.

Thanks for all the recommendations so far…

A friend of mine has offered to let me borrow his setup to try in small surf here in San Diego. I’m wondering if you guys think this would be a decent setup to learn on(or not, and why?)… From the information I can find online, this seems like an ideal setup to learn on for me.

I’m 5’8", 165 lbs.

Board: 90L F-1
Foil: Lift 200 Surf Foil setup

Again, thanks in advance.

I mean free is worth the effort. What version foil though. Lift keeps naming their foils the same thing.

I learned on that foil 5 years ago as my second foil. Newer foils are going to be easier though.

The board is most likely way too big. But that means you can ride even smaller waves maybe.

Post pictures of the gear if you have them.

Use the gear available. Just know newer gear will let you buy advances in performance.

I am also in San Diego wanting to learn how to prone foil.
I have an old Naish foil board with old school low aspect wings.
Where do people go to practice prone foiling?
It seems like all the locations are pretty crowded with surfers so I don’t want to be anywhere near other surfers.
Any tips on good locations that have small waves and no surfers?

Del Mar river mouth is a good beginner spot.

I heard they dredged near there and ruined all the bars for foiling.

I did not know that. Too bad, it was a good set up.

Also a newbie to prone foiling. But very experienced kite/wing Foiler. Have a prone board on the way but have been trying on my 95L camet wing board. Tomorrow (Monday) morning looks small and high tide. I’m in OB. Trying to decide between dog beach or maybe checking out sunset cliffs. Anyone else paddling out tomorrow morning?

Any other recommendations for places to prone foil?
